Back in November, when it was reported that the long-awaited sequel Zoolander 2 is finally moving forward, we also found out that Penélope Cruz had joined the cast. The actress was never confirmed until today, when star/co-writer/director Ben Stiller revealed on his Twitter and Instagram pages that Penélope Cruz has in fact joined the cast. Unfortunately, no details were released regarding who she may be playing.

She joins a cast that includes Ben Stiller (Derek Zoolander), Owen Wilson (Hansel), Will Ferrell (Mugatu) and Christine Taylor (Matilda), who are reprising their roles from the original 2001 comedy Zoolander. The news of Penélope Cruz's confirmation comes just a few days after Ben Stiller announced another new cast member, Cyrus Arnold, who is playing Derek and Matilda's son, Derek Jr. The very end of Zoolander showed Derek Jr. as a newborn, with the sequel set 15 years after the original.

Ben Stiller is directing from a script he co-wrote with Justin Theroux, who was at one point set to direct the sequel himself. They both collaborated on the 2008 comedy Tropic Thunder, which Ben Stiller directed and received a shared story credit on along with Justin Theroux. Production is currently under way in Rome, with shooting expected to last 12 weeks, both in and around the famed Cinecita Studios. Penélope Cruz will next be seen in Grimsby and This Man, This Woman, both set for release next year.
