Whitney Houston, who hasn't been seen on screen since 1996's The Preacher's Wife, is set to return to acting with a lead role in Sony's remake Sparkle.

Loosely based on The Supremes, Sparkle follows three sisters that form a successful singing group and then must deal with the fallout of fame and drugs. Mike Epps and Jordin Sparks have also joined the cast.

Salim Akil will direct from a script he wrote with his wife, Mara Brock Akil. Jordin Sparks, making her acting debut, is set to play the title character of Sparkle, the most talented member of this powerful girl group. Whitney Houston is playing her indifferent mother, while Mike Epps will play Satin, a stand-up comedian who gets one of the three sisters hooked on drugs.

Whitney Houston will executive produce this remake. No set start date as been announced, but cameras won't likely role until 2013.

Sparkle was released August 17th, 2012 and stars Jordin Sparks, Whitney Houston, Derek Luke, Mike Epps, Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter, Omari Hardwick, CeeLo Green. The film is directed by Salim Akil.

Is Sparkle that movie with Irene Cara?

@slysnide - . Obviously. I'm not talking about her career though. I am saying that the last time she was in the media was for her marriage to Bobby Brown. In the industry, almost any press is a good thing. She released a CD in 2009 but i don't think it sold that well.

@moviemaniac66: A marriage doesn't constitute people talking about anything she did in the business though. A marriage is just a marriage.

@slysnide - People have talked about her marriage with Bobby Brown. That has gotten a lot of attention a couple of years ago.

I've been waiting for this remake for so long. I was actually disappointed that Dreamgirls got made before this because I thought it would put this on the backburner for much longer. I'm not convinced that Jordin Sparks is a great choice but I guess we'll see. So far the cast sounds very amateurish except for Omar Epps.

The day Whitney divorced her husband Bobby Brown, she started getting better. Stop living in the past, she has been looking healthy and beautiful for years now.

"So haters look out for Whitney cause she's coming back real hard to show you all how it's really done."

Doubtful, but if she can stay away from those certain white "lines," then maybe she can find her way back to respectability instead of being a cautionary tale.

And I want to add that Sparkle existed originally before Dreamgirls. It's Dreamgirls who was made possible and existed because of Sparkle. Get your facts straight. Whitney already had planned a movie remake for Sparkle years ago but Alaayiah unfortunately passed away. The movie Sparkle actually is a lot edgier and darker than Dreamgirls and I expect it to be superior. But before claiming that this movie copies Dreamgirls, make a research and you will find out that Sparkle existed before and it's Dreamgirls that copied Sparkle.

LOL at people getting worked up when someone said that Whitney is a one hit wonder. It doesn't even deserve a response! Whitney is one of the most successful artists in music history with tons of #1 albums and #1 songs all over the world. I Will Always Love You, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, Saving All My Love For You, Greatest Love of All, I Have Nothing, I'm Every Woman, One Moment in Time, How will I Know, Run To You, I'm Your Baby Tonight, So Emotional, My Love is Your Love, It's Not Right But It's Okay, Exhale (Shoop Shoop), All The Man That I Need, Where Do Broken Hearts Go, I Believe in You And Me, Didn't We Almost Have it All just to name a FEW, have all toppled all the major charts and are still sung all over the world by tons of people. She has sold nearly 200 million records and even her recent cd called "I Look to You" was #1 in tons of countries all over the world, she will never go away cause her name is legendary and people will buy her records or see her movies forever. Her 3 motion pictures The Bodyguard, Waiting to Exhale and The Preacher's Wife have amassed over 550 million dollars worldwide (without adjustement for inflation) and her tv movie Cinderella broke rating records. She also produced The Princess Diaries 1 & 2, both major hits for Disney. The woman is a legend and frankly in this age of movies like Hangover, Jackass and whatnot, people do not deserve someone like Whitney producing and acting in a classy movie like Sparkle. I cannot wait for her movie comeback, she's also working on another movie, the sequel to Waiting to Exhale which is called Getting to Happy. So haters look out for Whitney cause she's coming back real hard to show you all how it's really done.

@slysnide except that you're wrong to call her a one hit wonder, considering that she had many hits before that damn song. I'm not saying that you're wrong in your idea, it's just that you are calling her the wrong name. A has-been? Definitely. A one-hit wonder? Not in the least.

@moviemaniac66: In pop culture, she sorta still is. Nobody's talked about anything else she's done since that damn song for that movie.

@slysnide - I do agree that she has not done anything big in the past 15 years. I just disagreed with you when you called her a one hit wonder.

@moviemaniac66: As I told ejk1, it's what the consumers recall that counts. You're talking over 15yrs ago when she was in her heyday. She's been practically invisible for the past 15yrs, which will become 18 when this film hits theaters.

  15. ejk1

@slysnide I'll agree with that statement, but not your previous one. Her music is still popular and influential. Her movies on the otherhand...

@slysnide - One hit wonder? Houston is the most awarded female artist of all time, and with 170 million records sold, she is one of the best selling artists of all time. She may have faded, but she is certainly not a one hit wonder.

    3 years agoby @moviemaniac66Flag

  17. slysnide

@ejk1: In the business, all that really counts is what the consumers are into. And she hasn't really done much that stands out in the past 15yrs.

@slysnide One hit wonder? She had a lot of hits before The Bodyguard soundtrack, so unless you mean her film career, I have to disagree.

As for Whitney, I hope she stays away from those "lines" long enough so she can remember her lines.

Whitney Houston is only known for her one hit wonder. Why she still gets these gigs is beyond me. I mean it'll have been 18yrs since she's been featured in anything by the time this flick hits theaters. It must be a real forget-me-not film. Yeah it is a remake after all.
