DisneyToon Studios will release Planes on Blu-ray and DVD in 2013
The sky's the limit as DisneyToon Studios proudly announces Planes - a spectacular, full-length CG animated comedy action adventure movie for everyone set high above the world of Cars. Planes will introduce an entirely original and hilarious crew of daredevils from every corner of the globe and draws inspiration from the immensely popular Disney•Pixar's Cars world. Planes will arrive on Blu-ray and DVD in Spring 2013.

"We had such a great time exploring the world of Cars over the course of two films, so it seemed only natural for us to see where our imaginations would take us in a film where planes were the main characters. By expanding the Cars world, Planes gave us a whole new set of fun-filled situations and a great opportunity to introduce some fantastic new characters," commented John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer, Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios. "The team at DisneyToon Studios has done such an amazing job creating a heartfelt story filled with great comedy, adventure, and emotion. I know audiences are going to love taking off into the wild blue yonder with these daredevil characters, as they experience a whole new kind of animated adventure."

Planes takes off with an international cast of the fastest air racers around, in a comedy packed with action and adventure starring Dusty, a small town dreamer who longs to enter the most epic around-the-world air race ... despite his fear of heights. With the help and support of a fleet of new and hilarious characters, Dusty wings his way into the biggest challenge of his life.

Fasten your seatbelt as more information on Planes will be arriving shortly.

Disney's Planes was released August 9th, 2013 and stars Dane Cook, Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett, Teri Hatcher, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Priyanka Chopra, John Cleese, Cedric the Entertainer. The film is directed by Klay Hall.

I think it's time to stop giving the theaters so much praise. All they do is rip people off with their high prices for uncomfortable seats and lousy food at high prices! It would be better if all movies went straight to dvd instead of theaters!

@bradfraggle - DisneyToon, Disney, Pixar . . . all one and the same to me :P

@elle-fasano - thanks. I mean, look what it did to Disney, right?

@diaigma I'm seeing your point now...straight to DVD tells the story.

Firstly, this is not coming from Pixar. This is being produced by DisneyToon Studios. So I don't understand the comments about Pixar getting off track with this..."Planes" isn't coming from that studio!

Secondly, the article says this is a direct-to-DVD project, yet then concludes saying "Planes comes to theaters in 2013." Is it theaters or home video?

@diaigma Newt would have been great and original, I bet, continuing their winning streak. Instead they're opting to go down the mediocre sequel path. It's depressing, since I once held a very high opinion of Pixar. Oh well. Looks like Dreamworks and Sony and some of those new animation studios can pick up the ball and run with it now.

Pixar's losing my respect these days, amazingly. Well, they had a good, what, 15 year run?

@diaigma I know right. I mean they were obviously lies because of that Tinker Bell movie they released last year and those cute, but annoying puppy Air-Bud movies. Somebody should ban Direct-to-DVD movies.

@moviegeek - yeah, well . . . if people are willingly shepherded to buy tickets for ANYTHING Pixar puts out, why do they need to be original anymore? :P

@moviegeek - too bad they already wasted time on a theatrical Cars 2 (and shelved an original one [NEWT] to do it).

Direct to DVD!!!! :D :D :D That's exactly where these Cars sequels, spinoffs, and inspirations should belong. This will give Pixar time to create an ORIGINAL theatrical release. Great news. Glad to see Disney has finally figured this one out.

For those of you who truly believe that Lasseter has full creative control and no one tells him what to do, I scoff in your general direction :P

This is coming from the same people who ruined various Disney classics with such crap as Fox and the Hound 2, Lady and the Tramp 2, Jungle Book 2, Cinderella 2&3, etc. Therefore, I will NOT be even renting this off of Netflix. John Lasseter, you stopped all of this by taking control of DisneyToons and getting things back in line after all the damage Michael Eisner caused, but it's now looking like your becoming his successor.

@shuabert - short answer - the minute Disney bought Pixar.

    Straight-to-video "Spin" offs, eh?
And so it begins. The crash and burn of the great and powerful Pixar.

The end of the article makes no sense, though. "Comes to theaters in 2013?"
