I think i've got it.
After spending countless hours reading reviews and really bad guesses (some involving giant lions) I do believe i have it figured out. all the solid information collected about turns to one beast: Cthulhu.
If you don't know about Cthulhu (Kathoolhoo) all you really need to know is that he's huge,Comes from the sea, Has claw's, he's pretty much the epidemy of terror, He is often preceded by the epithet Great, Dead, or Dread, and is said to look like A pulpy, tentacled head (dragon-y) surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings.
With the fist hand accounts of filming there is said to be one huge creature with a lot of minions and when the minions are mentioned there is always the word "star" floating around. Well Mr.Cthulhu indeed does have that also: "The star-spawn of Cthulhu, or Cthulhi, have a physical simility with Cthulhu himself, but are of far smaller size. This race arrived with him, but relatively little is known about them. On earth they built the city R'lyeh, which later sank in the ocean, and where they still dwell with Cthulhu"
So crafty JJ Abrams if you really did want to do an original horror flick Cthulhu would be for you.
