Thanks, @narrator. I very much appreciate it. I did mean to add In the Bedroom a while back, but I forgot. I basically consider all my lists as top-10 lists, but I hate leaving out other notable titles from each year. As for the surprises...
Vanilla Sky -- I just don't undertand the negative feelings surrounding that film. I really think a lot of it has to do with peoples' hate for Tom Cruise. Personally, I think it's Crowe's masterpiece. If this were a list of my favorite movies of the year, it'd be #1. As it is, I still have it in my top-3. I think Rolling Stone Magazine had it as one of their 10-best of 2001 as well, so I take some solace in knowing that.
Black Hawk Down -- With each of my lists, I'm basically sure up to a certain point (usually after adding 7 or 8 films); after that, it gets tough for me to decide which few films get the remaining slots. It usually ends up coming down to which films actually took some risks rather than playing it safe. Black Hawk Down, in my mind, was pretty well-shot and well-executed, and despite my finding it somewhat sloppy due to the fact that there was so much going on, I liked how it Scott wasn't afraid to take risks. And not to sound redundant, but I think it also made the cut as one of Rolling Stone's 10-best that year, lol.
Pearl Harbor -- Eh. What can I say? While I do think it's Bay's best film to date, it's obviously a very romanticized version of what happened. Not to mention they took a lot from classics like Tora! Tora! Tora! and From Here to Eternity, but I thought they did it in such a way that didn't infringe upon those works' respective genius.
I thought Affleck did a really good job despite everyone trashing him for his performance, which, for the life of me, I've never been able to understand. All in all, I thought it was a good film that, much like Vanilla Sky, catches a lot of crap because of peoples' ill-feelings towards its star. In any case, I think it's a top-20 film of the year for sure, but not top-10.

Astounding list, @thedude-abides. I obviously love the top two films, but I am especially surprised that Vanilla Sky is in your top three. That film has been hazed by more people, yet loved by almost as much. I feel like one of the few guys on this site who didn't condemn it or condone it. Lol.
Surprises also include Black Hawk Down and Pearl Harbor. The former for it's agenda (I still love the film, but I'd have expected that to throw you off) and the latter for its sappy romance from Bay (amazing cinematography and musical score aside). All in all, great list.

@moviegeek Yeah. I think in and of itself it's a perfect movie. The only problem is that its best isn't better than the top 2.

Vanilla Sky is four stars but it's lower than your top two?
