Thanks, @narrator. Kubrick is by far my favorite ever, but the other three I find to be tremendous auteurs in their own rights. Another thing I've noticed about myself is that I tend to lean more towards writer/directors than regular directors. I feel like their films have a more singular vision.

Great list, @thedude-abides. It certainly gives me insight into just what you look for in a film of "excellence". All of these guys are legends. I'll admit I'm not a fan of half of Lynch's work that I've seen, but that's more personal taste than anything. There's no denying his ability. And the other three are undeniable legends.
