Best Films of 2014

Best Films of 2014

My most favorite films of 2014. Unfortunately, I still didn't see a couple of movies like "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1," "Fury," "Nightcrawler," "Exodus: Gods & Kings," "Whiplash," "Big Hero 6," "Gone Girl," and "Birdman" all due to school work, time, and money, but as of now, this is my official list. 1. "X-Men: Days Of Future Past" - THE #1 movie that FULLY entertained me and made me care DEEPLY for all the main characters in the film. Bryan Singer's return to this movie showed me that not only does he STILL know how to make a very good "X-Men" movie AND handle its HUGE ensemble cast, but he has ALSO started a FRESH new life into this franchise, and it looks like the rest of this franchise will FINALLY continue on in a MUCH better direction after the horrible "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and some of the bad moments in "X3: The Last Stand." 2. "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes" - Not only does this sequel completely surpasses and improves over the original film by a MILE, but it ALSO has a great storyline, an Oscar-worthy CGI motion capture performance by Andy Serkis as the main ape Caesar, more amazing visual effects from Weta Digital, and an awesome sense of epic spectacle overall. Should I even say more? 3. "The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies" - As a huge fan of the Middle-Earth saga, this movie not only entertained and intensified me from start-to-finish (especially since seeing it in IMAX 3D), but it has ALSO concluded "The Hobbit" trilogy with a HUGE bang and it ties into "The Lord Of The Rings" trilogy PERFECTLY in my opinion. Even though it's not the best installment in the series and it's not as good as "The Desolation Of Smaug" was (which is my #1 favorite in "The Hobbit" trilogy and my 2nd favorite in the whole Middle-Earth saga overall), this new film is still GREAT, I absolutely LOVE it, and I want to SEE IT AGAIN. And the end credits song by Billy Boyd? SOLD! 4. "Edge Of Tomorrow" - A HUGE surprise for me. This movie shows that Tom Cruise STILL knows how to muster very well in a sci-fi action movie, and it has a GREAT new take on the time-loop genre, and also (ahem)...the ALWAYS amazingly beautiful Emily Blunt as a badass soldier? I'm IN! 5. "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" 6. "Guardians Of The Galaxy" 7. "How To Train Your Dragon 2" - Okay, honest to god...I originally was NOT fully impressed NOR amazingly surprised with the first movie as much as I thought I would have back when I first saw it in 2010. Why? Well, let's see...how super ANNOYING the main character Hiccup and Jay Baruchel's voice BOTH were, how half the movie was just WAY too silly for me to like nor CARE, and how I felt that half the movie was rather just RUSHED like a speeding bullet. And because of that, the first movie has been REMAINED as a contender on my 'Most Overrated Movies of All Time' list throughout these past few years...UNTIL I saw THIS amazing sequel. WOW. I absolutely LOVE this sequel. This great sequel FINALLY got me into this franchise and made me forgive the first movie at the same time. This sequel has it all for me: SUPERB animation, a FINE voice cast (it has Cate Blanchett in it, come on!), an EPIC spectacle, heavily EMOTIONAL moments, an AMAZING soundtrack, and, for the most part, the main character Hiccup being a MATURE grown-up instead of being the SAME annoying pussy that he was in the first movie. So...that's THAT. I surprisingly ended up being HAPPY with this sequel overall. 8. "Godzilla" - Not as good as "Pacific Rim" was, but this movie was good and entertaining enough for me to put it on this list. I actually had NO problems with Godzilla not being in this movie that much at ALL, and I thoroughly enjoyed the human aspect of it (unlike the "Transformers" movies), BUT...the only problem I DID have was how Bryan Cranston (as being a huge fan of his in general) did NOT have a lot of screen-time in this movie; he was only in it for about 15-20 minutes out of the whole 2-hour movie. But other than that, STILL a very good movie though. 9. "Interstellar" - Not Christopher Nolan's best movie due to its near 3-hour runtime and some hearing impairment, but with a great cast, awesome soundtrack, stunning visuals, and an epic sense of a sci-fi space adventure overall, this movie hit me HARD. 10. "The Fault In Our Stars" 11. "The LEGO Movie" - It took me 3 watches to finally understand the whole point (especially the ENDING) of this movie, but using full LEGO-style animation for EVERY single thing in this movie was ABSOLUTELY creative, jaw-dropping, and REALLY hard to do generally. And a great voice cast GALORES also (especially Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman). 12. "Lucy" - I know this movie will not be on anyone else's 'Best of 2014' lists, but "Lucy" REALLY surprised the hell out of me. My only complaint with this movie is that the ending could've been MUCH better than it needed to be, but Scarlett Johansson is amazing as always, the action sequences kick ass, and the story about how much we use our actual brain power is cool. 13. "RoboCop" - ANOTHER surprise for me. One of the few remakes that I enjoyed EQUALLY as much as the original film (just like "Total Recall"). 14. "Noah" 15. "Lone Survivor"
