Ummm... Ignore the timeline of events from the first film such as exactly when people get sent back and sh*t. Due to them being sent back in time it caused and alternate reality. The reason they are still using modern weapons is simple numb nuts. In the first 2 movies, the time period they are referring to is the 2030's. This movie takes place in 2018. Not to mention by sending ppl/terminators back in time it changed the future causing an alternate reality. If you notice they are saying that the T-800 is coming online 10 years ahead of time. The only plasma rifle shown is on the Harvester
