I think even Vincent Bugliosi is aware that it was more complex. He had to win the case, not a sure thing due to California laws. Manson may have felt slighted when he trespassed on Sharon's lawn in March of 69, but his motive was fame (or infamy.) I am sure he knew what he was doing by sending out his followers to kill an eight month pregnant star of a film that features taboo subjects of the time like abortion (she gets one in the film). He didn't need to do anything else after that. And also, don't discredit that things were not thought out in a neat way like a serial killer would. It was the summer of woodstock, the moon landing, Vietnam was raging. Not that it can all be blamed on "the times..."
