I TOTALLY agree with doing an adaptation of the original novel because Baum put so much stuff in it that is so respectable, original, and fantastic and completely disregarded because of the 1939 film. Don't get me wrong - the 1939 MGM version was an amazing milestone in film and theatre both, especially for that time period - but there is so much more to Baum's story than the film portrays. And, unfortunately, this is the only version of the story that so many people even know about.
Whoever is taking on this project is very brave and highly respected, but I just have one question: WHY AN ANIMATED FILM?!!??! With all the films that have come out in the past ten years with spectacular live effects, let alone in 2010 when there will be many more techniques I'm sure, WHY would this be a computer-animated film? We need a live-action version of the story with visuals such as those in "Lord of the Rings" and "The Chronicles of Narnia" films.
BUT, ultimately, it's the Director's choice. I just think that if MGM could do it live-action in 1939, just a few decades after film was even invented, AND have it be the most famous motion picture of all time 70 years later, it would certainly be not only amazing, but appropriate to have it live-action for the upcoming version.
