Bad film, only initial redeeming factor Salma Hayek - but then she grows a beard.. woe is me all of my fantasies are now corrupted.

Too ridiculous for words. Travolta looked too fat to pull off some of those action moves we see him do in this film. Jonathan Rhys Meyers carrying around a vase for the majority of the film verged on stupidity. This is like 'comic' action which I think works in films like Hard Boiled because even though the action is comic the actors are taking it seriously. In this the action was comic and the actors were comic, which I thought just turned it into an unbelievable farce.

Too simple for my liking, to go to so much effort and spend so much money to produce something 'simple' is a tad ironic in my book. You have a blank canvas, create a new and refreshing story. There are loads of stories out there waiting to be told, why do we have to keep having different versions of the same old tripe I don't know. Bows and arrows, these are aliens for crying out loud. What are the chances that these aliens would follow a similar evolutionary path to Native American Indians. Must be billions to one..
As for 3D, they ran a test in China with a 3D only release of a film and the box office profits rose by 20+%. Now as far as I understood they were looking into this 3D only releases in a move to combat piracy. Although as 3D is only an encoding method it can obviously be decoded, so I don't know what effect overall it will have. |

This film didn't capture my imagination in any way, I kept thinking Indians with bows and arrows. Didn't help with Wes Studi the guy who played Geronimo being the chief of the Navi. To be honest I thought I was watching a remake of 'A Man Called Horse' and if you haven't seen that film it is certainly worth watching.
The 3D aspect didn't wow me at all, in fact I am not so sure that I liked it that much. Thought it distracted in places from the actual film. Plus we all know why they are going 3D and it's not so much to give you a wonderful cinematic experience, it's to combat piracy. Now the previews of Alice in Wonderland plus Shrek did actually seem to be 'better' 3D from the short clips I saw, much more immersive and fun. Overall I have a theory about the movie going public and hype, I think some succumb to it easier than others. No disrespect to anybody here but this film and things like Titanic, The Dark Knight, are hyped well beyond what is actually delivered. |

Ninja Assassin reminded me of Shogun Assassin in terms of gore and arterial bleeds, I loved it. To be fair it does attempt to convey a story but fails miserably. But then this type of film is more about the fights and to be honest I thought it delivered. Well worth watching and a great review to sum up the film.

Anybody with an interest in movies outside of the stuff churned out by Hollywood can see where Tarantino steals the bulk of his ideas. I personally don't view his methods as tribute, tribute is doing something subtle as a nod to another film maker, a reference in the script a particular layout of scene. There is nothing subtle about the methods employed by Tarantino, even though he quotes things as inspiring him. The only real difference, as I mentioned before, is he turns things Americans wouldn't understand or be willing to watch.. into something to suit their appetites. That in essence is his winning formula and fair play to him, but he isn't a creative genius by any stretch of the imagination.
