As far as thinkinhg John is still in Hell, I think the interviewer might have gotten a quick overview of the show from the publicity depeartment, and isn't really a fan. Or has only watched season 4.
I'm pretty sure we were supposed to understand that John had NOT gone back to Hell. Turning into light and being pulled upwards is about as blatant as symbolism can possibly be.
