What this family needs (parents and child) is American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate with each other immediately and effectively. It is not difficult to learn basic ASL vocabulary skills, even as they consider and try other things (i.e., hearing aids, cochlear implants, speech and auditory therapies), which have uncertain outcomes and take a significant amount of time to implement. ASL will empower this family. Parents learn and use ASL (baby sign language) to communicate early with their babies who can hear. Do not deny ASL to parents with babies who are deaf.
