Don't be so elitists. I hate how people are writing it off as a teenie bopper fad. That's bull crap. Unless you've read the books you can't state that as your opinion. For the fans this book is an intense love story that relates to young females because it's a love that feels and reads like everyone's first love. The characters feel real and draw real emotion from the fans. We know the idea isn't new, it's the way it's presented that appeals us. Don't insult our intelligence, I'm a 20 year old straight A college student at UC and I still adore these books. But at the same time I read and love classic literature (I'm an English Literature major, in fact). I've read a vast majority of Shakespeare and this story evokes the same powerful, intense feelings of love, betrayal, lost innocence and lust as Romeo and Juliet. Jane Austin, I'd like to remind your was also considered a "Young Adult" author as well and in her time, her books were considered to be for the less mature and less intelligent. That's in the books defense.

In the movie's defense I'd like to say that Cathrine Hardwicke is a perfect director for this because of her experience of capturing the darker teen moments like in "Thirteen" and "Lords of Dog Town". Oh and it is lower budget, but lower budget usually means less creative restrictions because they don't have a big budget studio breathing down their backs. Summit's company motto is to provide big budget films for a low budget film cost. They were able to cast almost unknowns for an EXTREMELY popular book adaptation, but this just meant they could pick actors right for the part instead of actors who will draw large crowds. If they went big studio they would of been forced to pick big name actors and dumb down a lot of the ideas to attract viewers outside of the Twilight fan base. I anticipate this film to be one of the more faithful novel-to-movie adaptation in years.

I know perfectly straight men that love the book. It's also partly an action story/movie. It's not Blood and Chocolate and it's not The Covenant.

So, go ahead and spurn it but if you don't know what your attacking, then your argument has no merit.
