Marvel Comics has just signed a deal to bring The Black Panther onto the airwaves, in the form of a primetime animated series for BET. According to Variety the announcement was made at BETs upfront presentation as the highlight of a batch of new series being created for the 2008-09 season.
In the comics, The Black Panther is actually T'Challa, the king of the African nation of Wakanda. T'Challa is mystically linked to the Black Panther totem, which enhances his strength, agility and senses to superhuman levels. Additionally, Wakanda is the sole source of the metal known as Vibranium, and as such, has access to extremely high technology, which T'Challa uses to aid him in his role as the Black Panther.
While not a "crime-fighter" in the traditional sense, T'Challa does battle supervillains when doing so works in the best interests of Wakanda, and he has served as a member of the Avengers more than once.
