Seven noble families fight for control of the mythical land of Westeros. Political and sexual intrigue abound. The primary families are the Stark, Lannister, and Baratheon families. Robert Baratheon, King of Westeros, asks his old friend Eddard Stark to serve as his chief advisor. Eddard, suspecting that his predecessor had been murdered, accepts so that he can investigate further. It turns out more than one family is plotting to take the throne. The Queen's family, the Lannisters, may be hatching an incestuous plot to take control. Across the sea, the last surviving members of the previously deposed ruling family, the Targaryens, are also plotting a return to power. The conflict between these families and others, including the Greyjoys, the Tullys, the Arryns, and the Tyrells, leads to war. Meanwhile, in the north, an ancient evil awakens. Amidst war and the political confusion, a brotherhood of misfits, The Night's Watch, is all that stands between the realms of men and the horrors beyond.

@skywise -- I haven't watched Rome, and I've only watched the pilot for Deadwood, so I can't comment there. Yeah, which is why fans were(are?) getting nervous that Game Of Thrones would meet the same fate, so they started buying season 1 on DVD/Blu-ray.
True.
Actually, I saw a little bit of The Sopranos on AMC, but I couldn't tell if they took anything out(besides language, I think). AMC does an amazing job at censoring, so a lot of things will go unnoticed. Eh, I don't know about that. I'm really grateful that HBO didn't get Breaking Bad. Why? Because it would've been a completely different show, and contained corny/cheesy moments. They would also put in pervasive(unnessary) language, gratuitous nudity/sex, and minimized the quality.
I hear amazing things about "The Wire", and while season 1 is good, it's noticeably flawed. The acting isn't great, and the writing is flat-out terrible. There's a scene in season 1 where two of the main characters have to investigate a crime scene, and the dialogue quickly shifts into the F word in quite possibly every variation. They pause, "F*ck" -- investigate "F*ck", and upon conclusion - "Motherf*cker!". I don't remember the very beginning of the scene(whether they used actual dialogue), but the entire scene was constructed on swearing, pausing/investigating, and swearing.
It is, by far, the most cringe worthy scene(when it comes to premimum shows) that I've encountered. Absolutely pathetic!
I can understand the use of sex, nudity, language, and violence when it's vital to the story, but why does HBO put pervasive language in every(correct me if I'm wrong) show they make? It in no way needs to be there(most of the time), let alone in Game Of Thrones! That's one of the things I hate about HBO; they put inappropriate content in every one of their shows, just because they can! Can you be any lazier? The Lord Of The Rings is considered an epic by many, and they didn't swear once! So, how is it prevalent/necessary in Game Of Thrones?
I think that's one of the main reasons why HBO isn't getting enough views, and cancelled three(that I know of) of their biggest shows ever. Is that a coincidence? I think not. HBO doesn't have to neuter their shows, they just have to know when to put a random scene of people f*cking, and when not to.
I personally believe the content and fact that you have to be a HBO subscriber have a lot to do with HBO's shortcomings. I may be wrong, though.
What do you think? If you think I'm flat-out wrong, let me know. Maybe I'm not seeing their intentions clearly, maybe sex really does sell?
@dan1@ejk1 -- Let me know what you think.

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx I really cant argue with any of those points as much as my head is telling me too. I know that i love this show because it is really the first of it's kind that doesnt look like Hercules or Xena and damned if i didn't love those shows too but for completely different reasons. Rome was awesome and so was Deadwood. I think Rome ended right where they needed it too but the demise of Deadwood was a terrible thing to do to the fans of that show (and the cast). Now the thing about the budget is that premium cable shows are based on subscriptions and are constantly trying to pull in new subs so they will play their show over and over all week since their is no Nielson ratings but a quick look at the numbers shows that GoT averages about 3 million viewers on its premier night. On basic cable or regular tv that is a cancelation after one season for a show like this. "Non-premeium shows are a delivery vehicle for advertising-and if a program doesn't attract a big enough audience for those ads, the consequences are clear: It's pulled from the schedule, and a new show is dropped into the time slot." Audience is just another word for advertisement viewer for non-premium shows. Also because HBO doesnt have a any marketers to offend they can swear, screw sand splatter blood all over the picture. If you've ever watched the watered down reg tv version of The sorpranos you know what a difference it makes. AMC is a lot like HBO in some ways but it still depends on advertisements for its programs which does not take away from the drama but definatly limits what it could be and damnit, I really hate commercials.

One word: Improvement. The aforementioned is what Game of Thrones is begging for, and oh-so needs. Big battle scenes? Never take place onscreen. Editing? Sporadically incoherent. CGI/Make-up? Need work. Decapitated heads look fake, and stale. So does the CGI, at times. These things constantly take me out of the story, and remind me that I'm only watching a TV show -- which prevents me from being compelled by any occurring events.
Oh, and did I mention that the cliche's are plentiful - at times - completely unbelievable? "Unbelievable" may not be the word I should use to describe such a show, but when someone halts a chase, when all they have to do is look around the corner in order to make the catch, you know somethings wrong.

amalgamating every single intrigue, conflict and lust for power never gives a compromise...not even for The Wall and The Night Watch can cease. WAR IS COMING!
