For a SYFY Original series, this "Pilot" wasn't bad at all..

Since "Stargate SG-1" ended, the Syfy network has been nothing but bad television. I've given some of their series shots, like "Haven" and "Eureka" but never found enough potiential for me to stick with them long enough. With "Being Human", I found not only good story but something these Vampire knock-off series seem to never have: the feeling. In "The Vampire Diaries", Stefan hates being a monster but we never really get to see how far he'd go to be human again or how much he cherished life when he was human. "Being Human"('s) vampire Aiden and werewolf Josh are both broken and the show does an excellent job showing us the values of life and how lucky we are to, well, be human. It gets to the point where we actually feel bad for the characters, even in just one episode.

The storyline might seem cheesy to some, but, it actually focuses on a vampire and werewolf (both good friends) who decide to move into an apartment together in order to look out for each other a little more carefully after a night goes wrong for the both of them. There, they discover they're not the only ones living there and that a ghost, Sally, who is scared to pass on, is stuck there. The three all have a backstory that haunts their lives today and the show does a lot for just one episode, which is a perfect start, I think...

The acting in the show is pretty surprising. Only one performance did I not care for too much and that was from Meaghan Rath playing Sally. Her performance just seemed akward and I wasn't really feeling it as I did the others. As for Sam Witwer who played Doomsday on "Smallville" a few years back, returns to television as Aiden and is a very likeable character. His performance, not bad at all. I liked Sam Huntington's performance the best, though. His silly character is very likeable and gives the show a nice humerous touch. But, his character also feels like the most broken as well. Huntington's balance with seeming goofy and broken is great and it makes the character very, very mysterious. Mark Pellegrino, whose played in both "Lost" and "Supernatural" stars as Bishop, the bad-boy Vampire. Pellegrino is a great badguy in my opinon and he brings himself out in the episode very well. As for the acting, it isn't too shabby.

Overall, for a "Pilot", on the Syfy network I might add, this is more than entertaining and something I'll stick with for sure. The show has a brutal intensity that'll keep the audience craving more "Being Human". Give it a shot.

The only show I'm anticipating from them, and I'll be guarded optimistic about it, is BSG: Blood and Chrome, because they promised it to be more like the original Battlestar Galactica (absolutely phenomenal show, even if you hate Sci-Fi, you'd love it).

@Supes: Yeah, we'll werestling is fiction, as much as some like not to believe, so I think it fits on the network. :P But yes, I miss the old Sci-Fi as well. Once Stargate Sg-1 ended and all of the spin-offs and other shows and crappy TV movies started coming along, well it fell apart.

I did enjoy "Do you want to be the next Superhero?" from Stan Lee, though. Awesome reality TV show. I think that was the name...lol

    Thanks, as well.

Eh, sounds like a pass for me, I get my vampire fix with True Blood, and I'm pretty loyal to that show. But good review, I like these pilot episode reviews you do, gives me an idea of whether I should check out a new show or not.

I remember the old days of the Sci-Fi Channel (yeah, back when it was called that, not silly SyFy). They'd run decent sci-fi movies and had some shows late at night that featured amateur sci-fi shorts submitted by real people. Sometimes they were really good and unique. I miss that Sci-Fi. Nowadays it's f*cking wrestling lol.
