Just discovering Veronica Mars, I enjoyed ever episode up to this one. This episode was so bad it took two hours to watch it because I had to continuously pause and yell angrily at the screen. (Spoiler Alert) Let us put aside for now the convenient confession from Leo or Keith deciding to cover it up, both of which is out of character behavior. What really annoyed me, and I hope most other people, was the jury scenes. Clearly the writers, directors and nearly everyone else involved in this episode never heard of burden of proof. It is not enough to poke holes in the defendants' story, the defendants' don't even have to say anything. The prosecution has to prove guilt, and in most felony cases this proof has to be beyond a reasonable doubt. At the end of all of it, there was no more proof that they assaulted her than her word. This is of coarse the opposite of 12 Angry Men, which took a case where a man appears guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and than by poking holes in the prosecution's case appears less guilty.

My criticism does not end there, though everything else is less concerning to me then when writers change laws or sometimes even the principles of physics for their convenience. I hated the way the presented the facts of the trial. Veronica can do a voice over, while we see the hypothetical situations she describes. In fact, being able to quickly sum up the plot is one of the main reasons to have voice overs in the show. In addition, I felt the acting was not up to the normal par among the jurors, and the plot progress with the jurors was predictable and forced. The show's best strength in my opinion is that it was hard to guess what came next, and never felt forced (by forced I am referring to the fact that they "just figured out" whatever the new thing was to keep the plot moving forward).

It is very sad to see such lack luster writing in a main stream show. The best script writers in America go to Hollywood to write for shows. With 300 million Americans these script writers should literally be one in a million. The same goes for the director and everybody else. There is no reason that we should get such a horrible episode, which could only come from serious lapse of judgment and a good deal of sloth.

    Clearly I am disappointed.
