"I know where evil dwells."
- Vampire2000
Alrighty then! Here we are at my third favorite episode of Charmed, and what a heart-wrenching one this episode is. Like you all know, my Mom got me into this series, and it was about in the middle of this season, so I hadn't originally seen this episode, but it was still awesome when I saw it, and ever since I've loved this episode, you'll most likely notice something in common with all my favorite episodes so far, but that would be the fact that my favorite episodes are the ones where the sisters turn into demons, vampires, banshees, the lot, and as you'll come to find out by reading this review, that's the case with this episode as well. This one, I don't remember seeing either, so I just thought I'd rant on about WHY I liked these different ones that I've been reviewing, and here's where I say that if you haven't really watched this show at all, then you are missing out on a lot, and you are! This show is my favorite above all others, and hopefully some day, I can get all eight seasons on DVD. It's a race for me, since Mom has the first five already, but I have confidence that I can do it! Anyhow, on with the review!
The director of THIS particular episode was Chris Long, who only directed five episodes of Charmed, and out of the five that HE directed, this is definitely my favorite(Duh!), and I feel that he should definitely have been allowed, or should have opted to do, more because this was just an awesome episode. His vision for the show was unique, as was everyone else's who did the show, and he did great with the writer's story and screenplay, making it his own, as well as matching what the other three seasons of Charmed brought us, and making it feel the same as it's always been, just missing one crucial character that was all loved(:(). Speaking of writers and screenplayers and the likes, this episode's writer was Krista Vernoff, who directed eighteen different episodes of Charmed, one of which(Other than this one, that is) is on my top five list, so be expecting a review for THAT one soon. Anyhow, Krista Vernoff gives us a wonderful episode, that adds itself to Constance M. Burge's wonderful series, a series that has become my all time favorite. So together, Vernoff and Long give us an excellent episode of Charmed, that is creative, and excellent all at the same time. If you wonder what that means, it's just because some things can be creative, but very few times are they EXCELLENT. This episode WAS excellent however, and you should definitely see it, if you haven't already.
The visuals in this movie, as I continuously point out is the case with EVERY episode of Charmed, are spectacular. I'd like to start out with the look of the demon at the beginning that Piper decides to hunt down and kill, then I'll work my way into the look of the furies. The demon at the beginning seems normal, but his eyes turn blood red, and not just the whites or the irises, but the ENTIRE eye, but Piper blows him up, and it's hard to describe, and it's a little twisted to say it looks cool, but it does, the demon like turns red and expands, until BAM! there's green demon guts all over everything. lol. It might sound a bit comical, but watch the episode, you'll know what I mean. If you're familiar with Furies, then you'll know what I mean by this, but they look awesome in this episode. Beautiful females, with lots of tribal tattoos all over their face, and huge talons for hands. The vision for them was awesome, and it's cool to see the animators' take on the mythical creature. I also liked how the furies teleported, they turned into a cloud of smoke, and then disappeared all together. It was neat to see. So yea, the visuals in this episode were definitely worth the watch, and make for an awesome visual experience. Just another aspect of an excellent episode, of an excellent show.
The storyline of this episode, like every other episode that pits the sisters against a demon that seems to be much more difficult to kill than the last(Which, if you're a fan like me, then you know that that's every single episode, lol) is incredibly original, as well as creative, action-packed, heart-wrenching, tear-jerking, etc. etc. It's got everything, and it really is an awesome episode, and probably the one that makes me cry the most, some things just make me so emotional. I think it's the heightened vampire senses, lolz. Anyhow I just loved how this episode went about things, it carried out the story from the last episode(Which was a two parter), and added MORE to the sister's pain over the loss of Prue. Piper has now found a way to cope with Prue's death, and she does this by hunting down demons, instead of letting them hunt her and Phoebe down. That is, until she meets a Fury, and it turns out to be much harder to kill than she thought, as the Fury turns on her and smokes her. Soon Piper is a fury, and the sisters must find a way to make her normal again. I want to take this time to explain what exactly a Fury is, for those that aren't familiar with the mythology. A fury is a demon, yes, but it's more compared with vigilantes because they go after evildoers. They cause the evildoer to hear the pained and suffering cries of all the victims that the evildoer caused pain(Something much like Ghost Rider's powers, except furies were thought up LONG before Ghost Rider, lolz.), and then they fill the evildoer's lungs with smoke, killing them. However, if this smoke is turned on a good person, or witch, that person then becomes a Fury. However, much like the Banshee, and the Vampire, they're not fully Fury until they've made their first kill. The powers of a Fury are also expressed through a portal of unexpressed anger, or fury, and the only way to shut that, is to get the person to vent their anger before they become full Fury. Anyhow, this episode gains your attention right from the beginning, where the sisters are heading for the demon, and from then on, you're stuck to your seat, and can't look away.
Starring in this episode, of course, is Hollie Marie Combs as Piper Halliwell. Piper is now having an incredibly hard time getting over the fact that she's not only lost her sister, but she's also lost her best friend, a shoulder to cry on, and so much more. Now Piper is coping with this fact, by scrying and hunting down every demon in San Francisco, and vanquishing them, not caring what it is that she is putting Phoebe and Cole through. Piper is also not paying any attention to Paige, who's just come into her new powers, and is trying to learn them as best she can, however Piper feels it's hard to welcome someone in as a new sister, after what happened to Prue, it feels like she's replacing Prue, even if that's not the case. However, on one of Piper's little Demon hunts, she comes across a group of Furies, attacking a man, and she angers them, but before Cole scares them away, one of the Furies breathes her smoke into Piper's lungs and causes Piper's fury and rage to build and build. That's not helped by the fact that they find out Paige stole the book of shadows. Soon however, Piper becomes a Fury and runs off, to find her first kill. Now the sisters have to find out what has got Piper so angry, and make her vent this anger so that she can be normal again. Holly Marie Combs has this role down, and her suffering just makes me sad, I know, that sounded incredibly wimpy and shit but whatever. She really gets Piper's suffering, worries, and pain all down, and then makes an awesome Fury, and no one can replace Holly Marie Combs in this role, that's for sure, and like I've said, I'm glad that was never an issue. In this episode Holly Marie Combs delivers an incredibly convincing and believable performance that we can relate to and feel for all at the same time. She was definitely a great casting choice for when they put this show together, and I know I've said that a lot, but I'll continue to say it because it's true.
Alyssa Milano also reprises her role as Phoebe Halliwell, of course. Phoebe has been used to being the youngest sister for so long, and now that they've found out that they had another sister, that they never knew about, she's been thrust into the role of the middle sister, a job she never wanted because now she knows how Piper felt, playing the mediator between Prue and herself, and she doesn't like that. At the same time she's obligated to help and love Paige because it seems that Piper is distancing herself from Paige, for some strange reason, that Phoebe can't figure out, so Phoebe turns to Leo to help Piper figure this out. What's more is that not that Piper is on a rampage, hunting down and killing every demon that she can get her hands on, and putting not only herself into danger, but also Phoebe and Cole, and as Cole makes Phoebe confront her sister, Phoebe agrees and tries to reason with Piper, but soon they're attacked by a horde of Harpies in an alleyway, and not long after, Piper is turned into a Harpie. What's more is that Phoebe has to help Paige fix her problem after stealing The Book of Shadows and using spells for personal gain. Phoebe is definitely playing the mediator in this episode, and she does really well, lolz. Alyssa Milano has been Phoebe Halliwell since the very first episode of Charmed, and she just does an awesome job, getting down all of Phoebe's little quirks, and portraying all of her emotions, her worries, and her mediatorness all real well, and no one could ever replace her, another thing that thankfully never had to come up in discussions. She delivers us an incredibly convincing and believable performance as well as making this a character that we can relate to and feel for. She was definitely another great casting choice for the show, and I know I say that a lot too, but get over it, it's true.
Returning for her third, technically second, episode is Rose McGowan, who plays Paige Matthews. Paige has finally gotten used to the fact that she has magical powers, and has found her lost family and everything, and is trying to get used to it fully, but kind of having some trouble. When she goes to the Sisters' house to talk with them, and get to know them better, she finds that she's come at a time where Piper is going through some hard times, and goes to leave, but Phoebe insists that she stays, and that's when Paige sees The Book of Shadows, and gets an idea, she tosses it out of the window, even after Phoebe tells her that it needs to stay, and leaves, grabbing the book, and taking it with her to work. There at work, she tries to photocopy the book, but the book's magic doesn't allow that, and all the copies turn out blank. Anyhow, she starts casting spells, cleaning up her friend's acne, and then she decides to use one, called "The Instant Karma Spell" on the dirt bag at her work, and causes him to be attacked by everyone at ten fold the rate he hit on people. However, a side effect occurred, causing Paige's boobs to enlarge A LOT. This was not what she wanted, and soon she has to help Phoebe save Piper, and Paige knows from experience exactly what's wrong with Piper. Rose McGowan has been doing great so far(I say so far, as if this episode JUST was released), and she really does good at playing Paige(Fun Fact: Rose McGowan was not the original choice for this role, but rather it was intended for Jennifer Love Hewitt. Hewitt however, turned the role down to work on one of my other favorite shows: Ghost Whisperer.) and she really portrays the characters emotions and all of her struggles to get used to her powers. She definitely gives us another greatly believable and convincing and believable performance, and makes her a character that we can relate to and feel for as well. She was definitely a great casting choice, and though I can't help but wonder what it would've been like with Jennifer Love Hewitt as Paige(A good thing, I'm sure), I'm glad they picked her.
Starring again as Leo Wyatt, the whitelighter, of course, is Brian Krause. Leo has been trying to get Piper to get over Prue, but not in the mean way of course. What I mean is that he's been trying to help her get through this tough time, with the loss of a sister, and everything, so that she can move on, and be tough. Soon however, he is called back to the manor, by Phoebe and Cole, to confront his wife because she is out of control, scrying and hunting for demons, and then tracking them down to kill them, almost getting Phoebe killed, though he's not really worried about Cole because Leo still doesn't trust Cole all that well. So, Leo confronts his wife, and that's when the whole ordeal with Paige happens, and she is brought back to the manor with huge boobs, and then the man from her work, that she put the Karma spell on, is there too, and he must heal that man, and figure things out. This is all AFTER his wife turns into a Fury, though, and he also knows exactly what is wrong with Piper, and what she is so furious about. He just tries to be as helpful as he can, like he usually does. Brian Krause, as I've said, has been on the show since the first season, and he does extremely well, just as Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano do. He portrays Leo's worry and his calm incredibly well, and he definitely was the perfect casting choice for the show, delivering an incredibly convincing and believable performance, that makes him a character that you can really feel for and relate to.
Julian McMahon stars in this episode of course as Cole Turner, Phoebe's boyfriend, whom she's finally decided to trust. Cole has been dragged around to protect Phoebe and Piper while Piper is raging around killing off Demons, and he only does it to protect Phoebe because Piper is putting her in danger, and even though he cares for Piper, and is sorry she's lost a sister, he's had enough of it, and he and Phoebe try to talk some reason in to her, but it doesn't work and she carries them off onto another tiraded rampage, leading them to a group of Furies, now this is TERRIBLE for Cole, and he warns Piper to let them go, but she doesn't listen to him, and tries to kill them, but they attack, and smoke Piper, before Cole kills one, and they leave. However, now Piper is a Fury, and Cole must help Phoebe, Paige, and Leo to save her, and he decides to listen to Paige's idea to use him for bait. This is bad for Cole because being a Demon that's lived for almost an entire century, he's had many victims, and the Fury's power to make him hear his victim's cries, alone could kill him before the Fury does. However, he goes along with it so that he can save Piper so that Phoebe doesn't have to lose another sister. Julian McMahon once again delivers an excellent performance, as well he should because he's been with the show for quite a while now, and has gotten quite used to his character. No one could replace him in this show because he just IS Cole, he has all of Cole's emotions, worries, and feelings for Phoebe, and even Phoebe's sisters down, making them incredibly realistic, and delivering a performance that is both convincing and believable, as well as making this a character that you can relate to(besides the fact that he's a demon, lolz) and feel for a lot. He was definitely a great casting choice for this character when they decided to bring the character into the show in the third season.
All in all this is definitely another great episode of Charmed, as all the episodes are, and as I said earlier in the review, this is my third favorite episode of all time! It's just such an awesome and original episode that everyone has to love. Out of all the episodes of Charmed, THIS one is the one that makes me cry the most, and for someone like me, that's really rare, ESPECIALLY for a TV show. The episodes directing and writing were both done brilliantly, creating an awesome and intense setting and story for this episode, and the visuals only help that even more. The visuals are incredibly awesome, and make for one hello of a visual experience, and of course, you need the story to help you enjoy the visuals, and the intense story does all of that because it's just an awesome story, and one that you just have to love. The acting finishes off the awesomeness of this episode from actors whose performances emanate greatness, giving us believable and convincing performances, that we all can love. This was definitely an awesome episode, and I encourage everyone to try and see this, and the entire series, if you haven't already, it's my favorite show, and this is my third favorite episode of all time!!!!!
