With the release of Crystal Dynamics' new action game Tomb Raider today, the game studio and GK Films are feeling the pressure to reboot the film franchise. They are working very closely to bring the action franchise back to the big screen with a younger Lara Croft in what will essentially be a prequel.

Head of studio at Crystal Dynamics Darrell Gallagher expressed his excitement for working with the film studio and where they are planning to take the film.

"They are working from this new take that we've given them, It's a good partnership. We're seeing the challenges through the same lens. It was important for both of us to have a cohesive version of the franchise. We didn't want to see a film version that was a continuation of the old 'Tomb Raider' films."

Creative Director for Crystal Dynamics Noah Hughes said this about the character.

"Looking at Lara as a character, she was still going to be an intellectual heroine, a brilliant archeologist, but more athletic, more competent in traversal and puzzle-solving and combat, She really embodies adventure. She's an expression of all the things that are exciting and fun about going on epic adventures. There's an X factor that no one can explain but is universal in design. She's a great character to work with."

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life starred Angelina Jolie and brought in almost half a billion dollars worldwide. The question now is who will take the place of the leading lady in the new franchise?

Tomb Raider is in development .

@crypt Good point. But It will be interesting to see who they cast in the Tomb Raider reboot as Lara Croft.

@themoviefanatic I just don't think this series is a money maker anymore. I enjoyed the first 2, I'm not bashing them in any way, I just don't think the series is profitable any more ya know? Especially if they didn't have Angelina Jolie.

@crypt What if they find a younger famous actress that would be perfect for the role as Lara Croft? Do you think it would make much money then?

Eh. I don't think this will make much money.

Hmm, an undeveloped film reboot for Tomb Raider based off of a newly released game comes to theaters this year...seems legit.

@corey@ROFLitschristian@ROFLitschristian@diaigma I think the guy just used the word "prequel" because they're thinking about the new game with the much younger Lara, which kinda feels like a prequel to the other games even though it's still a reboot. They're obviously rebooting the thing, they're not gonna make a movie that leads up the the Angelina Jolie movies...

@narrator@escapist Olivia Wilde and Emily Blunt were my first choices too, either one would totally nail it. But if they're adapting it from the new game, would they have to go with someone younger? What about Camilla Luddington herself?

    Blunt is good

Well, Olivia Wilde has already been eyed for the role, but i would like to see a British actress play the role, maybe Gemma Arterton. If they were doing a reboot for an older version, i think Kate Beckinsale would suit the role.

@diaigma Good point. Someone young, talented, and admittedly hot is hard to come by in Hollywood when you're looking for a specific look like Lara has, English accent not withstanding. I hope it's neither, to be honest, because Fox might mess the role up and Wilde seems too much like the safe bet for now. Much like the Mary Jane casting decision, I'm in no hurry and neither should the producers be in a hurry.

Prequel? NO! Follow the gamer's lead and reboot the thing, already! :P

@narrator - It's tough. I wouldn't know who to pick now. Knowing them they'll pick Megan Fox or something, since she does look like a young Jolie to a T. Olivia Wilde is the best so far, but I'm open :P

I'm still rooting for Emily Blunt to take the role, like my good man @diaigma suggested two years ago. :P

@SherlockHolmes2009 Yeah I guess. Lol, it's just the term "a prequel reboot" that bugs me. It seems like an oxymoron. You can't just reboot mid story, which is why I tolerated having to sit through the origin again in TASM.

I've played all the games and have seen all the films.

    A reboot that's a prequel? If it's a reboot, how the f*ck is it a prequel!

@bawnian-dexeus No. I would rather them reboot it with an origin. Those other Tomb Raider movies with Jolie were god-awful.

  24. the Narrator

Following the path of an unreleased game can be sketchy, but fan reaction has been huge with the new direction of the Tomb Raider reboot, myself among them. I say they let this play out, and if the game is as good as it appears to be, they simply adapt that material and show us the cinematic origin story of Lara once and for all.
