MGM has acquired the feature film rights to Tomb Raider and will develop the new action adventure franchise based on the Lara Croft video game franchise in partnership with GK Films, it was jointly announced today by Gary Barber, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, MGM and Graham King, Founder, GK Films.

GK Films had previously acquired the Tomb Raider film rights in 2011 from interactive entertainment company, Square Enix Ltd. King will serve as producer and development of the first film will begin immediately. No casting has been announced.

Here's what Gary Barber had to say about teaming up with Graham King.

"Graham is one of the premier producers in this industry and I am delighted to be working with him on this exciting franchise. We look forward to developing more projects together in the future."

Graham King also released the following statement.

"I am thrilled to partner with Gary and his MGM team on rebooting this successful Tomb Raider film franchise. The enthusiasm over the recent game release is very encouraging and we can't wait to bring it to the big screen."

The original Tomb Raider game was published in 1996 by the London-based video game company Eidos and went on to become one of the most successful video games of the time. Eidos (including Crystal Dynamics) is now part of an international interactive entertainment group, Square Enix. A pop culture phenomenon, the original Tomb Raider games have sold over 35 million game units worldwide making Lara Croft one of the most recognized names in the gaming industry. Most recently, Square Enix released the highly-anticipated reboot of the series, simply titled Tomb Raider, on March 5, 2013 to critical acclaim.

@undeadslayer4 Because, i just can't imagine the character Lara Croft being any older then in her 30s or possibly in her late 20s.

  10. Sean

@undeadslayer4 Because she's too young for the role and she does not look right for the role.

@undeadslayer4 Jovovitch is too old to play the young Lara Croft. Hell the last few Resident Evil movies i dared watch had her looking a little old and haggard.

@undeadslayer4 Yes, i have seen the Resident Evil movies, but i just don't think she looks right for the part honestly.

@undeadslayer4 Eh, I don't think Milla Jovovich looks right for the part. As for Chloe Moretz, she's too young and show doesn't look right for the part either.

@Titon Yeah, Hayley Atwell as Lara Croft sounds like a good idea.

@skywise Either Hayley Atwell or Gemma Arterton that you mentioned of, would definitely be a great to play Lara Croft in a Tomb Raider reboot.

I haven't played the game yet - can't see Olivia Wilde in this film maybe someone else. Just not her.

I know Olivia Wilde is the popular choice at the moment and while she is gorgeous...i just dont want her anywhere near a Tomb Raider movie.

@Titon I could definatly see Haley Atwell doing the rolw. shes gorgeous and a great actress. Gemma Arterton would be better IMO than Olivia Wilde. But if I were going with an American it would probably be Odette Annable. However i am firmly behind the idea of getting a UK actress for the part. Or at least someone who can pull off a Brittish accent well. Maybe someone from Australia or South Africa.
