Tom Hanks and his Playtone Production company are making Major Matt Mason their next project after Larry Crowne, which opens in early July. Tom Hanks is producing, co-writing, and starring in this outer space adventure, and he is currently in talks with Robert Zemeckis to have his old Cast Away director helm the project.

Major Matt Mason will be shot in 3D, and is based on the 1966 Mattel action figure, an astronuat who lives and works on the moon. The toy line eventually went onto include Mason's three-man crew of civilian astronaut Doug Davis, the blonde and blue-eyed Sgt. Storm, and the African-American Lt. Jeff Long. They eventual team up with the giant alien Captain Lazer to battle the threat of hostile extraterrestrials.

Graham Yost, the creator behind the popular FX series Justified, is co-writing the screenplay with Tom Hanks.

As we previously reported, Tom Hanks is also producing six seasons of the HBO series American Gods, which is based on Neil Gaiman's award-winning novel, as well as the big screen adaptation of Green Day's American Idiot, based on the popular stage musical of the same name, all through Playtone Productions.

Major Matt Mason was released in 2013 and stars Tom Hanks. The film is directed by Robert Zemeckis.

Just the thought of Tom Hanks producing, writing, and starring in a movie is pleasant. The hype-factor is definitely there.

I hear ya, Skywise. I've loved Hanks since Bosom Buddies, man it's been a LONG time! I've really enjoyed Zemekis' work in animation during the 2000's, but this could be a great film for him to return to live action with. As usual, Hanks looks to be staying busy, which is always good news for us fans.

@thedude-abides Haha. Next thing you know, Zemeckis will be back to his old bag o' tricks... "come on guys, THIS time my CGI will be great! No, they won't look creepy as f*ck again!"

So, is this gonna be a kid's movie, or just another one of Zemeckis's animated adventures? Because the crew of the blonde-haired, blue-eyed Sgt. Storm, and the token black guy Lt. Long (whose name is either a funny coincidence or the worst gimmick ever created), teaming up with the a giant alien named Captain Lazer to take on an evil race of extra-terrestrials cannot, repeat CANNOT, be anything otherwise.
