At this time of year, there are always numerous Top 10 lists from various critics, announcing what their favorites of the past 12 months are. However, there is one Top 10 that no movie wants to be on, the Most Pirated Films of the Year list. Torrent Freak has compiled the data from BitTorrent networks, revealing that Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been pirated the most out of any film this year with 8.4 million downloads. Despite the massive amount of illegal downloads, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey still didn't surpass last year's surprise winner, the party comedy Project X, which was downloaded 8.72 million times.
The data is based on files downloaded between January 1, 2013 and mid-December, which is likely why the Top 10 consists primarily of summer 2013 releases and a few 2012 titles. Online streaming and cyber locker downloads are not included, since there is no public information to draw from.
