‘The Avengers 2’ to Offer More Creative Freedom for Joss Whedon

The director believes the studio won’t just roll over for him, but that he has earned a level of respect.

Director Joss Whedon has been making the press rounds in support of his latest film Much Ado About Nothing, which debuted at the Toronto Film Festival last week. Of course, he has also been talking about The Avengers 2, with yesterday's update on story details. The filmmaker revealed in yet another interview that his work on Marvel's The Avengers has given him a bit more creative control with the sequel.

"I have some power, you know? I think there's a level of trust. You know, Kevin Feige and I have always had mutual respect, and on the first movie he was very supportive. But there were definitely things where they were like, 'Hmm, we don't see that.' And I think now Kevin is in a place where it would be more like, 'We don't see it, but we think you do.'"

He also made it clear that his last statement doesn't mean Marvel Studios will just let him do whatever he wants.

"That doesn't mean they're just going to roll over and I'm going to say, 'Oh, it's 'Great Lakes Avengers' and we're going to get Squirrel Girl and you're gonna love it.' You know, they need to believe. But all I want to do is make the movie that they want. And so it's been great. We're having that same kind of, 'What if? Oh, and what if?' And 'I was thinking it would be funny ... ooh ooh ooh.' There's definitely a level of earned trust, but as with any good studio head or producer, that doesn't mean a free pass."

Joss Whedon will write and direct The Avengers 2, although it isn't known exactly when production will begin.

Avengers: Age of Ultron comes to theaters May 1st, 2015 and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., Elizabeth Olsen, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Cobie Smulders, Jeremy Renner. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.

Well, this is what happens when you direct a $1.5 billion juggernaut. The studio heads at WB should still be kicking themselves over not going with his vision of WW.

@dan1 Good point. Fox has been good to him in the past few years, giving him a second season of Dollhouse when the ratings didn't demand it, but this feels like true creative freedom, which can only be a good thing.

This was a beautiful article to read. Anyone that knows Whedon's history of being c*ck-blocked by networks/studios knows how big a deal this is. I love it.
