Thanos Is Being Saved for ‘The Avengers 3’ Teases Joss Whedon

In addition, the director says he wants Robert Downey Jr. to play Iron Man forever in this Marvel universe.

Joss Whedon hints that Thanos may not be used in The Avengers 2
Director Joss Whedon teased that the upcoming sequel The Avengers 2 may not revolve around the villain Thanos, who was revealed at the very end of last year's Marvel's The Avengers.

Here's what the filmmaker had to say about possibly saving the villain for the finale, The Avengers 3.

"Well, Thanos is more powerful. He is so powerful he is not someone you can just try out and punch him. Like he did in the comics, you want him to be threading through the universe and to save the big finale for 'the big finally'. He is definitely a part of what I have got going on. The thing about the Avengers is that they are very powerful but not very stable. So, there will definitely be some people that will shake them up in the next installment."

When asked about Robert Downey Jr.'s future playing Tony Stark, after recent comments that he may 'retire' the character, the filmmaker had this to say.

"I am not the guy who should worry about him being replaced. He is Iron Man at this point. When I heard that he was cast I just knew that something had changed, and I don't usually know stuff like that. I said 'Now we are in a new phase.' The way he embodies it... I love working with him. (Iron Man 3 director) Shane (Black) captures it so perfectly in this movie. I want him to play it forever. The thing is that he has a flying metal suit. It Is not like in those Charles Bronson or Roger Moore movies, when you are like 'Dude, you can barely stand.' He's got some fight in him. At the same time, if Robert decides to hang it up, he has a perfectly good excuse."

If Thanos isn't the main villain in The Avengers 2, who is? What do you guys think? Who do you want to see going up against the Avengers as a team when they return in 2015?

The aliens in the Avengers movie weren't the Kree or Skrulls, they were the Chitauri. They were actually called that by name in the movie too, so if you wanted to confirm it there's that or google.

But when thinking back, the Kree or Skrulls in Avengers 2 not only makes sense but feels alluded to. The movie made a big deal (with several references) about Earth being put on the radar for other worlds.

Then we have The Guardians of the Galaxy movie coming out before Avengers 2. Sounds like more setup can take place there.

I actually really hope so, so we can get Ms Marvel in the Marvel movie universe.

Ok, I am definitely not an expert on the Marvel Universe, but I don't see how Ultron could be the villain for Avengers 2 when Ant-Man isn't being introduced (or probably at least not in any big way) until Phase 3. And also, I figured they would wait for Thanos, it just made sense. Probably more background, in the shadows, pulling the strings kinda thing for him, like he did in the first one. I REALLY hope the second one focuses on bringing Black Panther into the Avengers.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was Ultron. For the naysayers regarding an Ant Man movie, who created Ultron? Hank Pym. I would be surprised to see an after-credits sequence with something like Ultron opening his eyes after thought to be a failed experiment.

@undeadslayer4, so was Optimus Prime, Megatron, Spock, Gandolf, Ripley, Trinity, Robert Downey Jr's Sherlock Holmes, Spawn, Eric Draven, Bill and Ted, Milla's Alice, Shatner's Kirk etc. We're talking sci-fi. Nobody has to be dead forever. Look at the crap they're pulling with Coulson!

If it will br Galactus, will he be a huge dude in space or some sort of cloud or vortex. Or a mixture of both like Parallax in Green Lantern.

I believe without a doubt that not only is the villain for Avengers 2 Ultron, I believe he's already been created. Within the first 10 minutes of The Avengers film, they tease this. Agent Coulson is instructed to move Phase 2 cases to a safer place. Later in the film, it is discovered that Fury was intending to create weapons as a result of Thor's fight with that robot in the Thor film. I believe Fury already hired Pym to not only help create those advanced gun weapons but use the technology found in the robot that S.H.I.E.L.D may have confiscated to help create Ultron. Some of those cases in the movie may have actually contained bits and parts of Ultron.

I think leaving Thanos for the third Avengers film is a great idea cause by that time, the majority of the Avengers team should be together and the climax of all the Phase 2 and Phase 3 movies will lead to the ultimate climax.

The obvious answer to this is Ultron but he has to be created by Pym so it can't be Ultron. & Galactacus & Doom still have the taint of the FF movies so there out.

Kang The Conqueror is the only real big Avengers villain left which could be cool but you'd could be dealing with alternate realities which might fly over audiences heads.

Cool, that means if they leave him for av 3, then who ever they choose will expand the marvel universe even bigger, which will probably lead to phase 3.

So who is going to be the next phase 2 villain? I hope RDJ stays for iron man maybe for two times but after that they should just retire iron man and give other superheroes a chance to be on the big screen and make a new team of the avengers unless he comes back for a civil war movie (if they make one)

Honestly...too much Marvel news lately. I'm excited and all, but I don't really care about Marvel releasing Phase 3 news before Phase 2 even kicks off. I mean...take it easy.

@the-movieghost True, but then when you throw in the word "Court" and "Death", those who paid attention or have seen that scene over and over would by now have looked it up on either Wiki, YouTube, etc.

Well I didn't figure it would be Galactacus or Dr. Doom @ejk, either of those guys would be... too weird being so connected to the Fantastic Four. After doing the amount of research I did on his/its character, I would LOVE to see Ultron brought into this series/universe as @john-m mentioned.

And I could see Thanos being mentioned or a quick cameo in Guardians, like you mentioned.

Death was mentioned, possibly very indirectly for those not familiar with Marvel lore, by The Other @bawnian-dexeus.

  20. Bawnian©-Dexeus

@ejk1 Indeed. Death should make a cameo at one point or another in phase 2. I mean, she's already been mentioned by the priest or was his name The Other? Add to the fact that there was a split second of the gauntlet in the first Thor movie in the forbidden armory. I would also like to see Odin and the other cosmic rulers to have a meeting concerning an imminent threat to the universe. Etc., etc...And this is just from the story you recommended me last year

@bawnian-dexeus Which is something he's strong enough to do. I also expect the Infinity Gauntlet to come into play, not to mention Death to play a big role in his actions.

@therealGoku I may be willing to agree, but only if the robots are sentient beings. That is a huge difference between Ultron and other robots. I guess I'll be able to give a clearer opinion on the matter sometime around Friday evening.

@ejk1 When Marvel decides to bring in Thanos, to satisfy what I already know about him is to have him bitch slap Hulk and Drax into silence. It would make my day

@Nick-Coyne If Thanos is defeated by the Guardians, what would the point of him being the main villain of The Avengers? His threat level would be damaged severely. At most, expect only a brief cameo in Guardians.

  28. John M

@ejk1: I am more of a Ultimate Marvel Universe fan now. I've basically stopped reading the regular Marvel Universe comics because they recycle story lines endlessly and of course the big thing death means nothing there. In the Ultimate Universe if you die your dead. There's no coming back to life with that the story lines have more meaning and so do the characters lives.

Like I said I was not a major Avengers/Fantastic Four reader growing up. The main comics I read were all the X-Men comics (I loved Excalibur especially when they introduced Peter Wisdom), Spiderman comics (Amazing Spiderman and Peter Park Spiderman being the best) along with the likes of Deadpool, Punisher and some others. While the Skull were mentioned or occasionally showed up they weren't the major villains for these heroes so I like I said don't know a whole lot about them and I'm sorry I made that mistake with the name.
