Following her breakout role in Kingsman: The Secret Service, Sofia Boutella has signed on for a lead role in Paramount's Star Trek 3. No specific details were given for her character, and Deadline reports that it's uncertain whether she will be on the good or evil side in the sequel. The news comes just a few weeks after we reported that actor Idris Elba is being sought to play the main villain.

Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness stars Chris Pine (Captain Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Simon Pegg (Scotty), Karl Urban (Bones) and Anton Yelchin (Chekov) are expected to return for Star Trek 3. No plot details have been released at this point, with Simon Pegg coming aboard to write a completely new screenplay with Doug Jung. Roberto Orci was previously set to direct from a script he co-wrote with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, but that script was completely scrapped after Roberto Orci left the project.

Justin Lin is set to direct, with Paramount Pictures reportedly aiming for a 2016 release date, which would help commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the original Star Trek TV series. It isn't known when production will begin at this time, but we'll have to see how quickly the cast assembles for the sequel. Aside from her role as the deadly assassin Gazelle in Kingsman: The Secret Service, Sofia Boutella's other acting credits include StreetDance 2 and Monsters: Dark Continent.
