Producer Gail Katz has obtained the film and TV rights to the hit multiplayer strategy game The Settlers of Catan. The game revolves around players trying to create the most dominant community on the remote island of Catan. Each person must outwit the other as they all compete for the island's scarce resources. Here's what Gail Katz had to say in a statement:

"I've been wanting to see an adaptation of the game for years, ever since my Catan-obsessed college-aged kids introduced me to it. The island of Catan is a vivid, visual, exciting and timeless world with classic themes and moral challenges that resonate today. There is a tremendous opportunity to take what people love about the game and its mythology as a starting point for the narrative."

Guido Teuber, Managing Director of Catan, Inc., also offered his own statement:

"We are thrilled to be working with Gail on The Settlers of Catan. Catan players are a diverse and dedicated group who are drawn in by the game's social interaction and strategy. We owe it to the fans all over the world to make sure any Catan content created lives up to what they have come to expect of the Catan brand. We are confident that our partnership with Gail will take us there."

Over 22 million copies of The Settlers of Catan board game version have been sold in over 50 countries worldwide, with the game translated into 30 different languages. The game has been profiled in Wired and The New York Times, and a Wall Street Journal article recently revealed that the Green Bay Packers players are obsessed with the game. Gail Katz's producing credits include The Perfect Storm, Bicentennial Man and Instinct. Her new film Pawn Sacrifice, starring Tobey Maguire, Peter Sarsgaard and Liev Schreiber, hits theaters later this year.
