Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana Will Return for 3 'Avatar' Sequels

Stephen Lang, who played Marine Colonel Quaritch, is also returning. All three movies will be shot back-to-back.

In a move that should surprise no one, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana have finalized their deals to appear in all three Avatar sequels, which will be shot back-to-back with Avatar 2 arriving in December of 2016, followed by Avatar 3 in December of 2017 and Avatar 4 in December of 2018.

Director James Cameron previously announced that Stephen Lang, who plays the villain Marine Colonel Quaritch in the original is also coming back. He was the first actor to sign on for the sequels. As his character dies at the end of the 2010 sci-fi epic, its anybody's guess how James Cameron and Josh Friedman, who is writing the second installment, plan to resurrect him for this continuing story. Duo Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are penning the third installment, while Shane Salerno is tackling the climatic chapter of this saga on his own. All writers will be collaborating on the overall arc of the entire storyline.

Plot details are being kept under wraps for the time being. The franchise will of course return to Pandora. It is also known that Jake Sully and Neytiri, the two characters played by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, will have kids.

James Cameron had this to say about the sequels.

"Jake Sully is a rare combination of passion, strength, street smarts and soul, which requires a lot from an actor. Sam brought to the role a combination of sensitivity, vulnerability and strength. Zoe captured every aspect of the character I envisioned, bringing to Neytiri a mix of delicacy, fierceness and incredible physicality. I am beyond pleased they'll be returning with us to Pandora."

James Cameron will produce the sequels alongside his partner Jon Landau for Lightstorm Entertainment.

Avatar 2 comes to theaters November 2016 and stars Stephen Lang, Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington. The film is directed by James Cameron.

Avatar 3 comes to theaters November 2017 and stars Stephen Lang, Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington. The film is directed by James Cameron.

Avatar 4 comes to theaters November 2018 and stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Stephen Lang. The film is directed by James Cameron.

Ugh, just forget it. Avatar is already 4 years old... It doesn't take much creativity to make a sequel. It's already got "JAMES BAY-Plosion CAMERON" name slapped right across its forehead, it shouldn't have been THAT difficult to make more Global Warming, rape Humanity films? It's not... What they SHOULD do, is make more films like Europa Report and District 9... Movies that are raw and have fresh new actors, instead of these Hollwood airfreshners that are thrown into the closet to keep the smells from choking the room.

Well yearly would be very hard to pull off when sometimes movies take over a year to finish up and start editing stuff plus promoting the film, So really 1 a year would be hard to do, this is not the 80s anymore when movies would be done in less than 6 months,
But i still think movies should be out atleast every 2yrs rather than 4 or 5, I do however like the formula of the avengers , having ironman, thor, captain america, hulk ect all being done every few yrs which keeps us watching while another 1 being made.

@jasonkat The examples you give of sequels being released every year though fall with each passing sequel. Something these big budget films can't really afford. Releasing a film every 2 years would be much better, and would give the franchise energy with new movie instead of losing energy.

unless you been living under a rock the last 2yrs, its already been said that AVATAR (2) would be shot back to back, 2, 3 and 4, they even gave us a date, summer 2016., i guess they are just reminding us, in case we 4got, lol
Now however it says nov, but still its 2016,
i like the idea of it being 1s a year, i think thats how most movies should be done, these days...movies such as friday the 13th, nightmare on elm street, trick r treat, paranormal act. star wars , ect.
