Sam Raimi Talks ‘Spider-Man 4’’s Villains

The director offered some new insight into the anticipated film.

MTV Splash Page recently got to speak with Spider-Man 4 director Sam Raimi, who talked about the film's villain. While he didn't reveal exactly who the villain would be in the film, he did talk about how they were approaching the villain, which you can see below.

"What we're trying to do right now is really understand the journey Peter is going to go on this time and have the villain maybe be a counter to that growth, something that he has to overcome," Raimi said. "Or maybe he has to grow in a way to overcome the villain, because there always seem to be stories of coming of age, of a young man growing up and learning things about life, so once we are identifying the exact movement that Peter has to grow to, I think the villain-and we're trying this right now; we're trying to choose a villain based on who would be the proper counter to that growth, so we really have dramatic conflict."

No one has mentioned that the rumors all say Black Cat is going to be pretty important in the fourth movie.
Personally, I think the film could be kept simple plotwise and complex character-wise if they just used Lizard and Kraven. I plotted out the entire film in the Spiderman 4 thread in the forums. Read it if you have time, but it basically revolves around Connors trying to cure himself and becoming Lizard and Kraven coming to New York to hunt him. There becomes a rivalry between Kraven and Spidey as far as defeating the Lizard, but Spidey knows who it is so he has to try to defeat him while protecting him from being killed by Kraven.

There's certainly no need for anymore Venom and DEFINITELY no need for Carnage (worst villain ever).

Worstpreviews has said that there is a confirmed truth to a rumor stating that Lizard is and will be the only villain in Spiderman 4. Take it with a grain of salt.

Yes but what he did was a crime, and no crime goes unpunished unless you are Tobey Maguire. Sandman is still a criminal and a sick daughter does not deter from this fact.

Peter forgiving Sandman worked because it was an accident plus he just needed money to help his sick daughter.

That is one thing about the Spider-Man flicks, every villain dies like its a necessity to move on. Yes and I know the one villain Parker should feel hatred for and want to have locked up for what he did, he lets him get away in the final act, thereby contradicting all of the films before it which established Peter as a self-righteous, do-gooder crimefighter on the side of pure justice.

[Sidenote: Only because Sam decided to make the film about "forgiveness," which BTW I saw no motivation or even any slight hint of inspiration as to why Parker would want to forgive and forget this guy. I mean, they twisted up the story of Uncle Ben's death (which was a guilt trip for Peter to begin with and sunk so deep into his being that it made him fight crime nonstop), and threw in this guy, the Sandman, and then in the climax, "oh, wait, no, its okay - you can leave, I forgive you." HUH??!? Why do you forgive him? Cuz his daughter from one scene who you don't know personally is supposedly sick? Nah, dude, he killed Uncle Ben! He's a criminal, and you are a do-gooder, throw him in a jail cell where he belongs!]

Anyways, enough Sam- and "Spider-Man 3"-bashing, I agree with a comment written before, about how Sam Raimi realizes the mistakes of "3" and is listening to the fans, hopefully. Yes and I am absolutely sure within my mind that The Lizard will be a main spectacle of "Spider-Man 4," and I heard unofficially that the studio wanted two villains, but we will see what turns out, what Raimi wants to do with "4." I personally don't feel that the film can be carried by The Lizard as the only villain throughout the film. Like a whole film about how Dr. Curt Connors has to battle with becoming The Lizard, and Parker has to take his mask off a bunch of times to connect with him emotionally (LOL, I guess I just know Raimi), I feel it would need a Villain #2.

The thing about the third film is that there were too many villains and very little story. I do have faith in Sam and will keep watching his films for years to come.
Though regarding the third film, I would have liked it if it was planed better. Making the 3 and 4 being connected, as Sandman exits from the 3rd and Peter help Harry out get passed his anger.
As they did, but things didn't pan out as it should since Venom showed up which did ruin the film a bit or more.
The fourth should be about Venom period, without that little kid from the 70"s Show as Peter now has to deal with a crazy alien.
If Venom never entered the picture I bet it would have been better and there was too much romance involved.
As I said above Venom should be the focus and introduce another villain at the end.
The one thing I liked about Batman Begin is Jokers calling card, Sam needs to start using this angle a little more.
The death of these villains needs to stop, personally I want to see them again.

i really hope they plan on having the lizard in the next film. I think of all the rogues gallery this would definately challenge peter because he is personally attached to connors. and if that is the angle sam wants to go with would make the most sense for me. although i think there is disagreements with the 3rd film, i have alot of faith in sam, and he is really listening to the fans. I would like to see the scorpion in it as well, but in all honesty hope they cut down to just one villain per film, introducing the next villain in the end. i think that would work better for character development, which seemed to be somewhat lacking in the third film.

I bet she will start to get naked and then BAM! Pipped into shreds by a decepticon. I would rather deal with that Leo character than see Megan Fox act. The only reason she supposedly apologized to Bay and the crew members of Transformers is because Bay stated he would have no problem replacing her with another hot actress and her film Jennifer's Body bombed out big time.

I don't think it has to be restricted like that, to tie into the other villain. Why can't it just be two separate villains that have nothing to do with each other? But still connect to Peter.

    5 years agoby @comicbookfanFlag

  16. rocco2216

I agree CBF, I pray to God that Venom and Carnage are just in the Venom spin-off. That's where they belong. And if the other villain with the Lizard isn't Kraven then who else could/should it be? The only other villain that works best with the Lizard besides Kraven is Morbius.

why they did not go the route of having the hobgoblin in full costume instead of marty mcfly as goblins son in 3 just ruined the series for me. I hate the blond chick and kristen dunsts comments about her character and feelings toward the franchise turn me off.

Like you said, we'll see. I personally have not heard anything about Sony wants to redo Venom or even Carnage. However if that is the case, then I think that is why they are doing the "Venom" movie. I don't think he'll make a return in "Spider-Man" films. Not that I agree with this, but Sam Raimi stated that he wants to set up The Sinister Six. He said that a long time ago, not sure if it is still true, but I don't think they would work in a film. I know he favors Vulture & Electro. We'll just have to wait and see who the other villain is besides Lizard and what "4" will set us up for. I don't think Kraven is the other villain either. There's also not been any mention of that. This is all fan speculation, at this point.

    5 years agoby @comicbookfanFlag

  20. rocco2216

No it's just two villains for 4 and two for 5. Two villains, Venom and Carnage, are set up for the next one.

    5 years agoby @rocco2216Flag

i dont think your theory worls tho for the villian plot. Thats 4 villians in one movie and Sam said he is not doing that again. Kraven and Lizard would work just fine together. But Leave Venom and Carnage for 5 and 6. You can create an entire great movie with just Kraven and Lizard.

  22. rocco2216

Hmmmm, interesting. I think it's Dr. Connors who would somehow bring back Venom since he has that alien piece in the lab. Unless another will fall from the sky, I doubt it. Sam Raimi would not like that at all but we'll see.

But there is speculation that Vanderbilt's unknown villain some how brings back Venom, in which only plasuible way to do that is well, the symbiote.
And Sony did want to bring back venom and do him justice.

But as said no confirmation yet, just speculation by people trying to read behind the lines of the news updates on the film and of course who'd they'd like to see as well in future installments.

It makes perfect sense as to why Sam Raimi didn't want to make two films back to back. He didn't want to have to make a film that involved Venom and Carnage. I just wonder if the Lizard and Kraven are still the villains for 4.

Diaiqma..."they tried to go dark" are you serious? I don't think my idea of evil peter parker, is a montage of him doing his best saturday night fever impression...finally culminating to scene of him hoping around in a jazz club like the f*cken Mask. Sorry, if you think it was their attempt at "dark", then you and I are oil and water...Spiderman & Spiderman 2 were fairly dark films.

Right here is the info on Vanderbilt's 2-part treatment that was meant to span for Spiderman 4 & 5.

    The info on it

Well the review never stated who the villain was, but rumour began flying that the villain was the symbiote itself.
Which does make logical sense, in terms of writing and of course 2-part.

I read that Vanderbilt's 2 part story draft for spiderman 4 & 5 involved Lizard, Kraven, Carnage & Venom. In which if the villain is the symbiote it all makes real logic sense, in terms of the universe of Spidey and writing a story that spans 2 films.

How i see it happening story wise

Lizard story goes as we all know and well, in one transformation the symbiote is freed, that opens the door for venom and carnage but they are left as a cliffhanger for this movie.

Once spidey finds out who lizard is, he cant bring himself to destroy him and tries to help him control his dark evil amphibian inner beast, so Kraven comes to do what Spidey can't (Thus following 'The Hunt' story arc).
A final battle commences but the symbiote is still attracted and determined to attach itself to its original host Peter Parker aka Spiderman, in the finale, the symbiote splits in 2 and one part gets the blood of Spidey man in it, which turns it red.
So we now have 2 symbiotes, the black one leaps on to Peter, bringing out the darker Spidey. As dark spidey battles his inner self and Kraven and Lizard duke it out, one of them ends up dying preferably Kraven, Symbiote is thrown off Spidey and cowers to the sewers, news report that Cletus Cassidy has just escaped, during the report of Dr Connors stating that he has found a cure and he is back to normal.

That is technically Spiderman 5 set up beautifully, and brings back Venomn and introduces Carnage.
