‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ Sequel May Go ‘Full Metal Jacket’ Says Rupert Wyatt

The director offers a couple of ideas about where he would like to see the follow-up to this past weekend’s hit go.

Director Rupert Wyatt discusses sequel ideas for Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Rise of the Planet of the Apes was the top movie at the box office this weekend, taking in $54 million in its first three days in theaters. Director Rupert Wyatt recently spoke about some of his ideas for a sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which includes an apes version of Full Metal Jacket.

Here's what the filmmaker had to say below.

"There's so much we could do... The ideas I've had are all sorts of things, ranging from Full Metal Jacket with apes... you could start this story again eight years from where we left off, the next generation of apes, those that have come from our protagonists, perhaps going in to a conflict with humans and showing real fear, in the same way as going into war for young soldiers in this day and age, telling their story. Or how apes are taking over cities, and being moved into human environments and having to interact with them and deal with things that are part of our culture and understand and evolve through them. Spies that are in the employ of the apes, working against humans and humans maybe existing underground, because that's a way they can avoid the virus, coming up above ground wearing gas masks, and maybe that's what dehumanises them."

A sequel hasn't been green lit yet by 20th Century Fox, but with a strong opening weekend under its belt, don't be surprised to hear about Rise of the Planet of the Apes 2 in the near future.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes was released August 5th, 2011 and stars James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Brian Cox, Tom Felton, David Oyelowo, Tyler Labine, Jamie Harris. The film is directed by Rupert Wyatt.

With the clues and information the movie gave us (and Rudy and Demetris pointed out), the sequel should be a remake of the original Heston PotA. Tim Burton's version's mistake was to modernize and to try and top the twist of the original. You can't ever top that twist. However, with this new universe that actually fixes all of the inconsistent history of the original series, you can now go forward clean. BTW Caesar was never said to be the first ape to speak. It was supposed to be Aldo -- no biggie, just pointing out the inconsistencies, but the original series did deal with alternate timelines. Make a movie that deals with the disoriented astronauts' return to a very different planet and trying to fit in with the new society. Hopefully the FMJ direction will be quashed by a smart producer.

@Demetris-Kontonikolas The astronauts are mentioned in the movie and you dont know the connection??!!! In the original planet of the apes, three astronauts crash land on a future earth where apes are the dominant intelligent species. "Damn you all to hell." So I guess they're aiming for another movie in which the original movie will be remade.

Instead of giving theories on what could happen here is what the movie gave ya but you didnt probably see:
    1. At a random part of the movie you see a random space shuttle take-off
    2. "BEFORE THE VIRUS SPREADS" , you see a random newspaper saying "Lost in space" meaning that the astronauts never came back!

Thus human race on earth extincts but humans might possibly be alive out in space. How could this connect to a second movie? I dont know but its a good clue!

iI got a great part 2 and 3 so hear me out
So lest go part 2 starts with Caesar as old we have his son in charge
the same guy that said Caesar talked tells it to the news, but we don't believe it,we think it was a random zoo escape he says they can talk the government covers it up he keeps going on talk shows till he dies saying apes are smart and they can talk
they say hes crazy like the 911 nuts, that say it was a inside job.
so humans start dying they think its like aids cause the government covered up the t virus, lets call it T virus so man dies world wide caeser wants to free all his people apes in zoos. so he does notice the Caesars freed us in the other movies, people start to believe that apes started the virus or there to blame like aids so they nuke city's to kill the apes, but the apes are smarter then us they have a radiation pill that works like we have . Caesar is dying like i said his son is in charge , man goes to ask Caesars son for help cause they the apes survived radiation and the virus, there super smart smarter then man so they go to them for a cure with a promise to live in peace . Caesar son goes to his father and ask him he says yes help man , my dad was a man and i loved him, man can be trusted like my dad . Notice the hint in part one he doesn't like to kill . so they find a old T cylinder like in part one they find a cure with the apes help . Man secretly plots to wage war with apes to take earth back now that there is no virus they are safe .but theres is spy ape that man trust he tells Caesars son they are coming for war to take earth back to kill all the apes .Caesars son tells his dad man lied thy are coming to kill all of us he ask his dad what do we do he says i granted them peace helped them but they lied he dies will crying his son cry's to . his son gives the same chant as his father in rise of the apes that means war so they have a war like no other apes win but don't kill all of man at the end we see the space ship going to earth saying 3000 years later on the timer in the space ship end of part 2

It's probably gonna be a Conquest for the Planet of the Apes remake. And then work their way to Battle for the Planet of the Apes but instead of having humans and apes coexist, humans are almost extinct. and then go to Planet of the Apes where humans from the Apollo 18 mission are transported to the future and mount a war against the apes while allying themselves with radioactive humans from a Beneath the Planet of the Apes remake. After the war, where humans and apes coexist, some of the crew members of apollo 18 who survived, repair the shuttle to try to go back to their own time, but when they go back to the time warp, they arrive in a future where apes are the only intelligent species.

Did I just combine all the movies into one?

I don't really like the idea of a new generation. We've spent so much time with Ceasar that he almost HAS to be in the sequel. I'm thinking we'll see him changing from one who just wants to be left alone by humans to being a leader in an all-out war against humanity.

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx I don't think so, not this time. It's been a pretty universal feeling among all the people I know that it was a great movie. As I said in my review, the dark horse of summer 2011.

@dan1 -- Meh, guess I'll wait for the DVD release, I really thought the movie was going to be bad, but now, I'm seeing all these great reviews/feed-back for it. It's pretty surprising, hopefully it's just not another "Easy A"(A movie you thought wasn't going to be good, watched it get raved, then watched it, only to be corrected by your initial response).
