THE HITCHER (2007)

""Just say you want to die""

"Just say you want to die" says Sean Beans character (the hitcher). The Hitcher delivers pulse-sounding surprises and murderous raving lunatics that do not set themselves apart from any of the other teen road trip films gone wrong. Sean Bean is sinister in his role as the Hitcher. From the producers of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the Amityville Horror comes the remake to the 1977 film the Hitcher. When you chose to take on a remake, you have to bring your own flavor to the project. Dave Meyers produces a remake without any flavor from the director that makes some remakes work.

No different than any other road trip teen horror movie, the Hitcher deals with Jim (Zachary Knighton), and his girlfriend Grace (Sophia Bush) driving to New Mexico to meet her friends and introduce her new boyfriend to them. While on the road they almost run into a hitchhiker who is just standing in the middle of the road. They make the mistake of not helping him and drive off. This may have been the last mistake they make. They decide to drop him off at a motel. What they are unaware of is that he is going to terrorize them and make their life a living hell. Sean Bean delivers an eerie hitcher who sends a feeling of uncertainty down your spine. You don't know whether you can trust him or not. This film has a great cinematography look to it with the tone palette used in it. It reminded me of the color of the cinematography in the Hills Have Eyes. In one specific scene the Hitcher makes a face on a police interrogation mirror with blood, while Grace (Bush) is on the other side of the mirror and can not see what is going on the other side. This scene reminded me of Jeepers Creepers; when the creeper is on the other side of the glass and Maggie is unaware of it. As the creeper licks the mirror in a way that is creepy. Sophia Bush is an actress that we have not seen in many movies. She doesn't convince me of the trauma and horror she is facing in the movie.

The Hitcher is not a very interesting film for teens. It is not a fantastic and unique movie, but it does have some very surprising turns to it. I would not recommend this film to very many people. I would recommend you wait for the DVD or Blu-ray to come out and rent it. The hitcher challenges your psyche of knowing who your friends are and who your enemy is.
