"Straight to DVD at its best!"
This wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be, or at least not as bad as it could have been. It's an older straight to DVD release, and I thought that was bad news. But the DVD cover was too cool to pass up! So I rented it, and was pleasantly surprised. It has plot holes, which I'll mention later, but if you just go along with it, the film is actually quite good.
The story has been used, and it's really not all that stunning. Ryan is afraid of the dark. He believes there are creatures in it. His parents go out one night, and big brother Dale is left with him. Big surprise... the lights go out. Now here are 2 plot holes I found- 1. If the power went out, how come the big brother is able to call him girlfriend? 2. How come these creatures don't try to attack anyone else in the whole wide world? Why JUST poor Ryan? Like maybe this kid is "special" in some way, like in The Sixth Sense, but as far as I know, he's not. So it's kind of strange that these creatures have never been discovered before, and they only attack this one kid. There are other holes throughout the film as well, but like I said, just go along with it, and you'll be fine.
The acting is decent. Not amazing, not crappy either. The little kid actually does pretty good. Definitely not as bad as other child actors I've seen before. The film doesn't require much acting skill, so there's not too much to say here... but it's not bad at all.
The director is K.C. Bascomb. Never heard of him before, but that doesn't mean much. I like some of of his directing, and dislike some of it. I really hate in one scene when the creatures are appearing, and instead of putting in some chilling, creepy music, he puts in some rock music. It was horrible. I do like how he makes you actually care about the kid, and not just make him look like some dumb kid who doesn't know what he's talking about.
Nothing special visually. I mean, there's no chance for it to be, because it all takes place in one house. But the creatures are pretty creepy... for a PG-13 horror flick.
Overall, I really do like the film. Actually, I just bought it. Even though the film is PG-13, it isn't cheesy, and has it's spooky moments. You'll like the film, as long as you're not too much of a critic.
I hate to review the DVD, but it was my only option, because there's no film results. Since I am reviewing the DVD, guess I'll say that the picture was a bit fuzzy, but it wasn't bad, and nothing wrong with the sound. DVD special features include filmographies, and I think one or 2 other things.
