"Historically accurate with a phenominal cast and realistic characters."
Seeing as i don't fall anywhere near the demographic group The Other Boleyn Girl was aimed at my saying that it was a good movie means a lot. I'm not a fan of drama's particularily ones like this that follow an overdramatic love triangle and i also find films about this time period boring but The Other Boleyn Girl shocked me with it's many good points. The acting first of all is nothing short of phenominal Natalie Portman is the highlight giving us a very shrewish yet dependant Anne Boleyn while Scarlett Johansson plays the tattle tale innocent little sister Mary Boleyn perfectly as she goes from an annoying character to the character you like the most both of these leading ladies have a great range and give classy and dramatic performances without overacting. Eric Bana is great as the emotionally closed King of England and while his character is vastly unexplored you find the whole mystery of who this man is part of why you like him, Bana's intense facial expression and line delivery are fantastic.
The story is surprisingly quite historically accurate with no unneeded gore, explosions, or special effects just an intelligent story with real and deep characters a movie that makes you wonder whose side you are on. I love the realism in the chartacters because all of them are at one point doing something very wrong be it adultery, seducing, and even incest making the characters very flawed and very real people. I also enjoyed the way you side with various characters, throughout the whole film your opinion of these people changes numourously and in the end none of them except for maybe Mary Boleyn are likable. The tale of how Britain lost roots with the catholic church becomes very understandable when you see the king's mindset and all of the people out to seduce him simply for a title or for their families greed most of the supporting characters are detestable for the fact that they whore out their daughters to be showered with gifts, it really sets the tone for the time period.
Visually the film is also amazing without becoming overly cluttered, the Other Boleyn Girl doesn't flaunt it's beautiful set or costume design like many Zhang Yimou films you just kind of notice them your primary focus is on the masterfully told story and not on the pretty colours. I sincerly hope this recieves oscar nominations next year definatly for costume design and while the year is still young Natalie Portman deserves a supporting actress nomination. The music is fitting to the time period but nothing special none of the scores stand out or are memorable they just sort of play softly in the background. Justin Chadwick is an awesome director he told the story in a way that satisfies both history lovers and those like me who are in the completley rong demographic. Bottomline if The Other Boleyn Girl can satisfy an action junkie who loves horror films it will entertain anybody.
