"Brilliant acting saves a so-so story and directorial execution..."
Will Smith gives a stellar performance amidst unbelievably difficult circumstances. By "circumstances", I'm referring to both the apocolyptic landscape in the story, but also to the directorial execution and story-line.
The story had a lot of potential. Obviously, this tale has been told before. With the history in the telling, I though we'd have gotten a fresh line on the story with a lot of the "flair" you usually get in a picture paying for Smith's skills.
I found the film to be paced a bit slow. There is a whole lot of not much going on. Yeah, I know that is as much a "character" in this story as is Neville, but you have moments where there is a lot of story to grab ahold of (the hunting sequences, on both sides, etc.) and then you have just long stretches cast adrift.
The CG-assist on animals is deeply disturbing and quite disappointing. Overall, the visuals in the story leave SO much to be desired.
Overall, this is pretty passable execution, although -- unfortunately -- Smith's outstanding skills on display, here, are somewhat left cold by the story and direction.
