"Picking Up the Pieces"
I fell in love with Ellen Page when I saw her in "Juno." She has a HUGE roll in this film The Tracey Fragments, in fact, she's in nearly ALL 117 minutes of it, and I have to say, she was amazing.
This film is done in a very interesting way. As the title suggests, you watch the story unfold in isolated fragments, or smaller pieces on the screen, like in separate frames, which are sometimes many and small, and other times are large and all connected...its hard to explain, and at times, somewhat hard to watch. I felt like if I looked away for even a second, I would miss something important. I don't mean that to sound negative in any way, it really made you focus on what was happening, but it could be disconcerting to some viewers.
The story itself is told in a sort of convoluted, broken way, which, along with the editing style, is very relevant to the title of the film. While I enjoyed watching this flick, I definitely wouldn't want to watch too many films this way. And I'm not really sure how I felt about the way the film ended. It was not satisfying in any way at all, and I'm not to sure that that wasn't the point.
I have to say that aside from feeling like I had seen an amazing performance by Ellen Page, and had just witnessed something different and interesting, I wasn't left with a whole lot else after this film. Technically it was astounding, and I really can't stress how great Page is, but I don't know if this is a film for a very wide audience. Those that would be interested, however, will probably feel something very near to what I did.
It was good, Ellen was great, but the movie itself wasn't anything that I will hold dear to my heart, or probably ever see again. And still....4.5 out of 5.
