"An adreneline fueled circus of stupidity, Crank:High Voltage is so frenzied and frantic it puts Tony Scott to shame"
Here's a movie that takes the beautifully over the top premise of Shoot Em Up and kicks the shit out of it until it's nothing more then an adreneline fueled circus of stupidity. Crank: High Voltage is by far the most entertaining experience i've had in the theatre in awhile. Oddly enough it is the first movie to make me cry laughing in an even longer time not even comedy greats like Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and Yes,Man had me laughing to the degree that i was during Crank 2. All i can say is bravo to everyone involved who made this the most deliciously cheesy and badass action/comedy ever filmed. Brett Ratner needs to take some tips from Mark and Brian who clearly know what works and what doesn't for a movie like this.
In terms of acting Jason Statham reprises Chev Chelios and plays the slick, quick witted, never fearing, hero of the day to perfection and delivers cheesy lines better then Arnold himself while kicking more ass then Van Damme could ever hope to. Amy Smart is great aswell she's tough and shows off her crazy side aswell as other sides of her "personality". The supporting characters are incredibly absurd we have an asian hooker reminiscent of Full Metal Jacket (oh me sucky sucky two dolla!), a crazy asian mobster who carries a human organ in a box, a crazy tatooed hispanic, a samoan homosexual with full body tourettes and his gang of gay bondage hookers, an angry spanish mobster named the ferret, a white trash mullet wearing strib club douche bag, and a fat black hooker named Chocolate. Everyone is perfectly casted oh and did i forget Mr.David Carradine playing an old asian kung fu master who wants Chelios's heart? As you can see this movie is intentionally over the top and more then anything dumb fun it accomplishes everything it sets out to do.
Visually the film is gorgeous utilizing quick movement and shaky cam while showing us the full extent of the fights, it's hyper stylization is more frantic and frenzied then Tony Scott can ever dream of being it truly is an incredible film. The camera movement and angles intensify every scene making something as simple and mundane as running look incredibly and impossibly badass. The script is one liner city movies like Batman and Robin may finally be beaten in the department of corny dialogue. Crank 2 is easily a fun ride it combo's action and humour perfectly to the point that you can laugh and be in awe by the choreography at the same time. The stylism is similar to Natural Born Killers millions of cuts, random filter changes, random camera angles, random metaphorical cartoons/video game sequences/puppetry it's remarkably original and makes itself undpredictable due to it's complete disregard for physics. Crank 2 will not be liked by idiots who are unaware of what it's meant to be the same idiots who said Shoot em up was bad for being unrealistic. Those who are ware of Crank:High Voltage's purpose and genre will have the time of their lives, enjoy folks!
