WATCHMEN (2009)

"Minus a terrible soundtrack Watchmen is quite simply perfection smart and fun it'll satisfy you!"

Well it's finally arrived the most celebrated graphic novel of all time has arrived in movie form and damn it's good. Zack Snyder has solidified his status as a top action director and has earned that title without a doubt here. Watchmen is pretty much line for line scene for scene the book granted their are a few things left out and a few things changed we've all known that there is no SQUID so only whiny purists who don't have the internet will be disappointed. While most people feared disappointment and wondered if the new ending wouldf work let me tell you it works perfectly well. Without the campiness of the squid which to me came totally out of left field the new ending takes a more realistic tone and at the same time perfectly preserves the films overall message and that particular sequences intensity.

On to the acting...WOW every actor could not be replaced they captured each character to perfection Jeffery Dean Morgan plays a cruel, lovable asshole with The Comedian, Patrick Wilson portrays a washed up has been Nite Owl, Billy Crudup and Jackie earle Hailey ARE Dr.Manhattan and Rorschach noone else could have made those two characters have come to life better than these two NOBODY. Malin Ackerman makes Laurie's constant whining and complaining tolerable in this movie whereas i hated Laurie's personality in the book i enjoyed her here. Matthew Goode while agreed he doesn't look like Adrian Veidgt my god does he ever pull off one hell of a screen presance he looks like a skinny gay man and at the same time looks like a coniving and intimidating mad man I enjoyed his performance perhaps most of all because i wasn't expecting it.

The directing is incredibly masterful Zack Snyder doesn't overemphasize everything the way he did in 300 here he knows exactly what parts to slow mo and what parts to stylize to add to the experience rather than to just be flashy. There is a lot of slow mo don't get me wrong it's just a matter of whether it would fit the scenes or not and trust me it not only fits the scenes it makes the scenes. The movie stays incredibly faithful to the book but granted a few things are missing or changed but the effect is always the same the point never changes and the movie never feels like anything but WATCHMEN!

The visual effects are Snyders typical mind blowing green screen CG effects to me Zack's SFX team is second only to Michael Bay's SFX team and here Zack creates beautiful landscapes, dark dank city streets, and of course the perfect Dr.Manhattan. the only noticeably CG character in the film is Bubastis but luckily Bubastis is only in the film for two maybe three scenes. Everything has been preserved which is what i'm thankful for we all kbnow there are things that work on film that don't work in comic books and vice versa, the squid would have been difficult to produce, probably would've cost a lot of money but most of all just like it did in the book it would've taken me right out of the story and remind me "Oh yeah i'm watching a movie" for that i appreciated the new ending. My one and only gripe with this film is it's music. Tyler Bates scores are mediocre for a film of such epic proportions, they are too quiet and too bland and simplistic they add nothing but at the same time detract nothing from the film, sure they fit but another composer could've have made the score more memorable. The soundtrack in my opinion is awful the songs are clumsy and awkward they don't take away from the scene completley but they just feel forced for example All Along The Watchtower, Hallelujah (Cohen version), and 99 Red Balloons could have easily been replace with songs more fitting to the scene off the top of my head the sex scene would've worked much better with Pink Floyds "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" i could just think of a more fitting soundtrack and i thought none of those songs were necessary. Oh the end credits song My Chemical Romances Desolation Row cover is like all things MCR a complete abortion! Luckily the movies over at this point and we don't need to listen to that whiny voice. Overall it's an epic experience perfectly made minus the music.

No i'm not ignorant of old music to be honest i think new music for the most part sucks i love most of the songs in the movie i just think that a lot of them did not fit and that other songs would have worked better. The meaning and lyrics worked absolutley 100% my issue is that harmonicly and musically it made the scene feel awkward and clumsy in my opinion anyway. It's like playing hard rock music during a dramatic scene kind of awkward it just felt off to me. I will 100% disagree with you on Bates's score and trust me i love Tyler's music i just thought that he brought a seriously underwhelming and boring score to the table for an epic movie like Watchmen. I though Philip Glasse's scores were more moving and fit better during the Manhattan backstory. Oh well to each his own

I am not sure why people hate the soundtrack. The songs actually tell a story within a story. It may be the newer generation that don't really know the meaning behind the songs themselves. They are perfect where they are placed in the movie. They matched perfectly. The Tyler Bates score was also very good I have purchased both. I also thought MCR remake of the Dylan classic Desolation Road was done well. Give it a chance.
