"Decent! But that's about it!"
Superhero Will, I’m sure all his fans have thought him that way before this movie ever happened. HANCOCK is an unlikely superhero movie with a twist that may not be that surprising but it does its job in explaining the origin and the mythology behind… the man with superpower strength but no memory whatsoever of who he really is. HANCOCK is an action/comedy movie that is as good as it’s ever gonna get
I like the mythology part of it, if you don’t want spoiler you might wanna look away.
Of how the story seems to make him appear that he was once some sort of a Greek god, timeless and mighty.
And like all the Greek gods, Hancock has his own problems too, it’s mostly depression, alcoholism motivated by years of loneliness.
And let’s not forget the gods tend to envy humans, some of them wanna become mortals too.
I find it kinda cool how the story reminds us of other superhero stories… the way that the bad guys always get to the hero through his loved one or the woman.
And just like Batman, Superman, and Spiderman, it all comes down to one conclusion,… the safer it is for the woman if the hero never stays with her in the end.. because his presence around her will only bring her nothing but potential danger from his enemies.
Superman’s weakness is not only the kryptonite, it’s Lois Lane, because he’ll do anything for her.
The way to provoke Spiderman is by using Mary Jane as bait.
The movie HANCOCK has its own way of incorporating that.
Let’s talk about the visual effects, I think it’s decent.. but compared to other blockbuster movies out there today (The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man) I think HANCOCK’s CG extravaganza still got a long way to go.
There are just some images or a few scenes that you know could use some more tweaking.
At times, the original score reminds you too much of the sound of the music score for Superman movie. I don’t know if that was on purpose, as an homage.. or that composer John Powell couldn’t come up with anything original.
This role is made for Will Smith. He’s good at playing a drunk, washed up jerk who just doesn’t give a damn. Will Smith’s still got his sense of humor. It’s the comedy for the audiences who don’t mind outrageous adult-type situations with a mix of adolescent silliness.
Jason Bateman does well as the PR friend who helps HANCOCK fix his reputation.. he’s funny, he’s got that corporate, good husband look, I just think he could’ve been better in expressing his emotion through his acting skill which I’m pretty sure he’s got. Charlize Theron, she is just a wonder to behold. She is as talented as she is exceptionally beautiful.
I think director Peter Berg (The Kingdom) Producers Akiva Goldsman and Michael Mann (Heat) just wanted to bring something entertaining for us this year and they’ve managed to do so.
Would there be a sequel? It might happen, who knows. But I don’t think there should be any more after this… because once again, this is as good as this movie’s ever gonna get. A stand alone story that opens and closes with a satisfactory response.
