I like this movie! I don’t care what the critics say, they should make more movies like this. After seeing an excellent romantic comedy Penelope last week, it’s refreshing to see another one this week in the form of MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY. It’s a delightful film, it’s very enjoyable and it has… two great main actresses, Frances McDormand and Amy Adams. What a remarkable collaboration! I can’t imagine this movie being done by anybody else.
I have to admit the story is typical, it’s about choosing between passion or career. It’s decision to follow love or follow your ambition and the statement of life is short.
But what makes this movie interesting is the writing, the dialogue and the interaction between the characters that are fast paced and yet brilliant.
It’s a bit challenging to keep up with the wit sometimes, but that is the best part. You have these two women who find security in each other’s company, one needs the job and the other needs a mentor or a friend.
Amy Adams is perfect in this movie, she can single-handedly change emotions and facial expressions from one second to another in a heartbeat. She’s cute, she’s funny, she has a beautiful figure, she can sing, what an amazing young actress. You can’t keep your eyes off of her anytime her presence enters the screen.
Frances McDormand is an amazing talent. Next to Meryl Streep, I’d say she could be another one to be called as an actress almost as great as the late Katherine Hepburn. Her character Miss Pettigrew is a nanny/social-secretary/motherly figure. It’s not a combo of Nanny McPhee and Mary Poppins, this one is in a class of its own.
This movie’s got great costume for period pieced films like this one (it is set in the time right before WWII), it’s got great art direction, it's great music, it does a fine job in portraying the upscale life of the rich and famous in London back in that era, the life it offers, and the compromise it demands.
I’ll never get tired of a story about staying true to your heart no matter how scary it might appear to be. We only live for a short time on this earth, it’d be a shame to spend it too much on ambitions that won’t make us happy in the long run. We have to make the best of what we have and there’s nothing more lasting and rewarding than a passionate love.
