"An odd mix of crude humor & a love story."
I heard many good things about this movie, but never really wanted to see it that much. I really only got it because it was free, and well... there's such a big deal about this movie, and I was pretty much the only one who hadn't seen it yet, so I figured that I probably should, just to say I have. Plus Elizabeth Banks had a small role, so I guess it couldn't be all that bad... and it wasn't. Now, I don't totally hate this movie lik I thought I would, but I certiantly wouldn't go as far as to say that I liked it. I wouldn't really want, or go out of my way to watch it again, but it was pretty funny (not extremely funny) for a viewing.
Also, I normally don't think it's a big deal when I watch an "unrated" or "Director's cut" version of a film, and then review it. But this time I think it might be, because it adds like... a whole half an hour to it. Not quite a half hour, but a lot more than most "unrated" cuts of movies. I wouldn't recommend the Director's cut, because 2 hours and 15 minutes is an outraegous (spelling???) running time for a comedy, that really, has nothing to it. Even the regular version is like... an hour and 50 minutes, which is really long for just a simple, mindless comedy.
Our story starts with a man, who is 40, and his friends at the electronics store find out he's a virgin. So they try to get him to go out and screw some chick. It's a story that COULD be funny. but it only is sometimes, due to the randomness of the film. Maybe all the BS I saw was only in the Director's Cut, but there were many pointless scenes that came out of nowhere, and made absolutly (spelling???) no sense whatsoever. And half the scenes weren't even funny. Just random crude stuff, that just made me gag, not laugh. The shit in the opening credits should have been edited out too, I almost shut it off right there.
There is a surprisingly good cast here. Obviously there's Steve Carell. He should stick to clean humor. He's not good at this crude stuff. I liked him much better in Get Smart. In the parts when he wasn't being crude, he was sorta funny, but really, most of his "funny" scenes weren't funny. Also, the film starrs Paul Rudd, of the fairly newer comedy, Role Models, Seth Rogen, also in a newer comedy, Zack & Miri Make a Porno. Those 2 comedies were much better than this one. Zack & Miri Make a Porno may have been way more crude, but at least it had something to do with the storyline, making a porno. But anyway, all these people do... good I guess. I mean, you don't need skill to do this movie. But sometimes Carell's facial expressions were pretty funny.
Judd Apatow is the director. Don't know him, but I don't want to after this. he pretty much screws this movie up. It could have been something at least a little more funny than it was. Plus I don't like how he's trying to make us feel for Carell's character, and yet throwing crude humor at us at the same time. I was really feeling bad for the guy, then they said/did something gay, and it totally ruined the moment. He is a terrible director. I hate to compare this movie to a movie that I already compared it too... but right now, it's the only movie that I know of that did this sort of thing right. In Zack & Miri Make a Porno, when the film is trying to explain it's love story portion of the film, it drops the crude stuff for a little bit, and lets the audience actually care aboout the relationship. But in this movie, we're suppose to care about the couple, and I didn't give a shit if Carell lived happily ever after or not. I just wanted the movie to end alreay. It had been like... 2 freaking hours.
So, I guess this was a decent film, maybe worth a watch when you got nothing else to watch, but make sure you watch it "with the guys" because I could tell that's what they were going for. A guy movie, not a date movie, or chick flick.
Sorry for the spelling mistakes... I'm still out of spell check.
