"Three words... Not That Exciting."
My first impression of the world of Watchmen was this movie. I never read the graphic novel, and I tried to stay away from anything that gave away heavy plot details during the whole hype process.
That being said, I sat down and watched this movie, and from scene to scene couldn't help thinking, "that scene could have been chopped down...". There are lots of drawn out scenes in this thing, all of which, I know are probably crucial to the overall capturing of the original graphic novel's feel, but as a movie goer, I got bored fast. And trust me, I'm the guy that loves summer blockbuster popcorn trash like Transformers. I didn't want that for Watchmen...but something was definitely lacking that made me really care.
On another note, I understand that this whole storyline came from the original graphic novel, but it's all bit ludicrous when it comes down to the costuming of these characters. I mean, everyone except Dr. Manhattan really had no reason to be dressed so ridiculously. I get it. You have to hide you true identity from the world...but spandex and crazy leather get-ups?
With all that said, the movie is beautiful to look at. The visuals are top notch, and the directing couldn't be better. Definitely worth checking out on the big screen. As far as owning this on DVD or Blu-ray, or ever experiencing the upcoming hour longer director's cut...count me out.

As far as your review goes, you give great points, and good job.
Anyway... great review. You hit it right on the nose. I see you edited your stars on story and directing. Fits the overall rating much better ;)
Anyway... I thought the acting was ok.... about a 3.5, the story was well told, but boring at times 4.0, the visuals were easily a 5.0 (but way too much male genitalia and the soft porn in the Archie mobile was unnecessary), and the directing is like a 4.0 (some scenes were too long and some were unnecessary). This IS NOT a perfect movie nor is it a absolute great one.
I have both read the novel and now seen the movie... and just like any book turned into film.... the book is better. Die Hard Watchmen fan boys will probably grill me for this, but the movie is far from perfect. Its not a 5.0 star movie.
I did enjoy the movie though. Love the way Kelly played Rorschach and the fight sequences were great. The visuals were superb. But again.... its not perfect. Too many fan boys give this movie a 5.0 because of they're excitement at how the movie stays SO close to the book, but as a MOVIE fanatic, there were so many scenes that could have been left out and the run time could have been shorter. The story could have been moved at a bit faster pace without losing its flavor or drifting away from the novel.
It IS a damn good movie, but not perfect. Probably a 4.0 for me.
I juat want to comment on movie mage's responce. he actually did cut alot of scenes by the way. I've read the book and i knoww whoever wants to go and watch watchmen will have an impression like this. much of the people that wnt to watch watchmen will be like "I am going to watch the action in watchmen, not this."
but the truth is that watchmen is a moral idea about superheroes and how would superheros would actually be if they were real. (cutting manhattan off of course.) and also you can't disagree with the fact that it had a much bigger idea than you thought it will. that is why it is repectable in my mind. I think the idea of watchmen goes beyond only the story of watchmen. it is an idea that is so true and complicated. also you can't cut not even one scene out of the movie because you wouldn't have known half of it without each scene shown in the movie. you see watchmen is not the typical movie you just want to watch to entertain yourself for 2 hours and then just remember how entertaining these 2 hours were. watchmen is for you to catch up with the crazy idea they are giving you about life and humans and superheros in humanity more than the actual story itself. the sotry itself would be boring (a man died and they are trying to find out who killed him. to not say the end.) but the inbetween of the movie is the reality of heroism if it was real and I can't discuss watchmen because it is a wide thing for me. the book ranks #1 amongst all the books. and the movie ranks #2 of all time.
Also how come you have story, directing and visuals 5 stars and acting 3 and a half and the overall is 3. don't you think you should even it out a little. I mean siriously is this a joke. anything that has perfect visuals, perfect story and perfect directing would rank a 5. DUHHH.
