""Hi. It's good to see you. Oh, what a nice car. Excuse me while I throw-up"."

This film is part of the first "8 Films to Die For", which overall disappointed me. I personally do not feel that they lived up to their "too graphic, disturbing, and shocking for general audiences" theme, but that's another story. Out of the 8, Penny Dreadful is one of the better ones.

Directed by Richard Brandes, this film stars Rachel Miner (The Black Dahlia) as Penny Deerborn, a teenager who has amaxophobia, a fear of cars. When she was a little girl, she was in a car accident in which both of her parents died. Since then, she refuses to drive or ride in one.

Mimi Rogers (The Door in the Floor) plays Orianna Wells, Penny's therapist of six months. Orianna tells Penny that in order to conquer her fear, she must face it; therefore she plans a trip where she and Penny drive to the site of the accident. Armed with her relaxation tapes, a stres ball, and a bottle of Valium, Penny anxiously agrees.

Along the way they stop at a gas station. Fans of the original Hills Have Eyes (Wes Craven) will see Michael Berryman, who still looks creepy even today.

While driving, Orianna is lecturing Penny about the Valium (apparently she did not prescribe it). She accidentally hits a hitchhiker. Feeling guilty, she offers the person a ride. This is where the terror begins.

Without giving away anymore storyline, Penny finds herself trapped in the car between two trees, unable to get out, while the hitchhiker (an escaped mental patient) terrorizes her.

There are plenty of scares, and Rachel does an excellent job. Her body and eye movements are believable, and you can truly feel her anxiety.

The visuals were at times hard to see, since alot of the film takes place at night inside a car, and in the mountains. But overall, this is a good movie worth watching.

I think said it before that you can review any way you want any where you want, I think on that movie I asked you was about what you rated the movie as itself, in the aspect of Story, Directing, Visuals, and Acting, as to what you gave the movie, not the DVD, for Alive or Dead, the review may be the same but the rating may be different, or to make it sound easier, I was asking how many stars do you give the movie, versus the many stars you gave the DVD, hopefully that cleared it up.

this is one of those stupid times where DVD is the only option of reviewing, like all the rest of that tear's horrorfest. The recent year is different.

Perhaps I should have reviewed this under movie and not dvd. Yes, these were in the theater and NOT straight to dvd; since I personally watched the dvd prior to writing the review, I categorized it as "dvd review". So if I played a part in the confusion, sorry, BlizZz and Vamp.

Their not straight to DVD movies, they go to theaters like the dollar theater, or select theaters like the Chinese theater in L. A., or like the Crest in Sacramento, it's a festival where it shows all the movies for 2 weekends, you get extra stuff when you by the pass, they also have movie that do go straight to DVD, but aren't part of the 8, and you, can even go to a party in L. A. with all these people that have to do with the movies. Then people vote on the best movie, and then that one is wide released in most theaters, but then last year they had all the movies playing for one week in all the theaters in Sacramento, as far as everywhere else I couldn't tell you, I don't live there, and the reason why I know this is because I missed two Horrorfest: 8 films to Die For, but I'm going to this years.

Great review! I've never watched any of the 8 Films to Die For movies before, and I don't really plan to. Not because I'm too scared, just because I don't want to end up wasting my time, they are after all straight to DVD. However, this one sounds very interesting! Again, great review!!!!!

The movie just could have been better, and scarier, but the main reason why I say that is because the ending, it did a Soprano ending.

Hey BlizZzard - I see you didn't care for the Abandoned...personally I thought that one was okay. Deaths of Ian Stone is quite good. It's from the second group of 8.

I'm going to see them all, bad or good, just because I can, and I want to but so far the one I have seen was bad and that was the Abandoned, not scary and good enough.

blizZ, I will say that this is the second best of the 8. Gravedancers is even better, but this one is still good as well. But dont see Dark Ride, that was the worst.

I felt the same way, I thought these movies where so to be too terrifying to be seen at regular real theaters, not independent and not scary enough to be in regular real theaters, but I still want to see them, even if there a let down.
