LIFE OF BRIAN (1979)

"Who says that blasphemy isn't entertaining..."

Written, directed, and performed by the Monty Python comedy team, this movie is about a person who is mistaken for the messiah. It delivers a combination of themes, controversial to say the least, having inspired picketers, and lines of protesters handing out leaflets decrying the moral turpitude of all involved in the making of the film. All that follows is a procession of classic Python satire, with numerous laughs to be had in the vein of typical, and awesome British humor. Following a series of misadventures, with a brief trip to outer space, the fugitive winds up in a lineup of wannabe mystics and prophets who harangue the passing crowd in a plaza. Forced to do something plausible in order to blend in and keep the guards off his back, he babbles nonsense that attracts a small but intrigued audience. Once the guards have left, Brian tries to put this behind him, but has inspired a cult; and finds people have started to follow him around, with even the slightest unusual event believed to be a miracle. For the most part I loved this movie. It goes beyond a casual view for those who are not fully initiated into the worldly forms of entertainment, and I will admit that many will not find the humor contained within the confines of the English construct to be satisfying or funny. I did, however, and now am the proud owner of the latest release, having added it to my collection.
