THE BLACK DAHLIA (2006)

""Black is the new Gold""

From Brian DePalma who brought you Scarface and The Untouchables, comes the murder mystery, The Black Dahlia. As two reclusive partners Bucky Bleichert (Josh Harnett) and Lee Blanchard (Aaron Eckhart) faces their new-found responsibility of being homicide police detectives, they are challenged with one of the most terrifying and gory homicide murders in California: the murder of Elizabeth Short (Mia Kirshner).

This film has a sort of appealing aspect to it. It mixes in the tone of the sepia color to create an old film from the forties. The film's picture is reminiscent of the old Dick Tracey movies that were stylishly gripping. The plot of the story is one that causes detectives to scratch their heads. Scarlett Johanson is a gem in this film; she reminds me of a young Marilynn Monroe. The acting she gives is worthy of an Oscar nod. In my opinion, Scarlett Johanson is one of the best actresses of our time. Although Scarlett is a beauty to behold, the same can not be said of Ms. Hilary Swank. Hilary plays the daughter of a rich man who looks like the girl who was murdered. Hilary is a splendid actress but her beauty does not match Johanson's. Josh Harnett is the perfect actor to play a retired boxer turned detective, but he does not perform as well as the man opposite him, Aaron Ekhart, who delivers a spectacular performance. The movie is filmed with multiple camera angels with which audiences can clearly see in the background and in the focus point.

The Black Dahlia is a fun and surprising film. Not only does the film achieve its goal on a physical level but on a physiological level as well. This film is the type that makes one think and ponder what is going on because it doesn't reveal too much or too little. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys mystery-type thrillers and to any Scarlett Johanson or director Brian DePalma fans.
