An original and entertaining film that teaches you that the world is never as it seems. A great film for the whole family.

When Jared Grace, his brother Simon, his sister Maury and their mother move away from New York into their Great Aunt's old house in the middle of nowhere, Jared makes a remarkable discovery. In a hidden room in the attic, he finds a book that contains the secrets of the hidden world around him. Little does he know who else seeks the power of this knowledge.

The Spiderwick Chronicles is and incredibly original story with colourful characters and comical creatures that come together into an epic adventure that is fun for the whole family. Most fantasy stories generally involve entering another world, take place in another world, or have two worlds come together. The Spiderwick Chronicles breaks these cliches by creating a world that is not a separate world, but rather a world that is merely hidden from human eyes. The creatures in this world are original twists on classic fantasy characters such as the goblin, hobgoblin, ogre, etc. The only real problem I had with the story is that it made the movie seem shorter than it actually was. The pace moved a little too quickly and the full potential of the story was not developed entirely by the end.

In terms of acting, the film is great. The actors put on a convincing and believable performance that is both entertaining and gives us the ability to empathize with the lead character. The creatures are brought to life with an excellent voice cast featuring the likes of Martin Short. All in all the acting is on par with great films of its kind such as The Chronicles of Narnia.

The visual effects of this film were done very well. Smooth motion and wonderful texturing bring the creatures to life with a visual feast that brings to mind films like The Chronicles of Narnia and Bridge to Terabithia. All in all, the whole of the visual effects gave the movie its charming and magical feel and made it well worth commending.

Now that I have said all that needs to be said about this film, go, watch it, love it. Take the time to see the fantastical world around you in The Spiderwick Chronicles.
