After viewing Charlie Wilson's War, I must say that I am truly impressed with this film. I went in to this excited but a little unsure of how it would be but the film triumphantly smashes all expectations.
The true strength of the film is the acting by far. Hanks, Roberts, and Hoffman do a wonderful job with their roles. Mr. Hanks does an amazing jobas the charming but mischevious congressman Charlie Wilson from Texas. After being somewhat disappointed in his performance in the Da Vinci Code he truly shines here and showcases just how great of an actor he is. Also, it must be said that Phillip Seymour Hoffman is an absolute revelation here as he steals every scene he is in as the CIA agent Cust.
THe plot was also very well done as it deals with Mr. Wilson's attempt to create a covert war on the Soviets in Afghanistan, the plot moved extremely well and it did a job of showcase the complexity of this situation and how this event influences us today. The only problem some people may have is that it does make parallels to the Iraq War and the mistakes we have made in both Afghanistan and Iraq in terms of the endgame, or "keeping the peace." If you are a conservative you may have a problem with this, I personally didn't and was relieved that the film had the guts to take on the tough questions in terms of our foreign policy.
Overall, this film was an absolute tour de force, and ladies, Mr. Hanks even had a nude scene in it. (wink, wink) 5 Stars.
