"ONE...TWO...THREE!!!"
Beaten, sad, alone; these words describe the life of Randy "The Ram" portrayed amazingly by Mickey Rourke in his triumphant comeback.
The Wrestler is a piece that brings the world of professional wrestling to life in all its glory and all its downfalls. On top of the world one minute down in Hell the next. We see the life of Randy as he is desperately trying to survive barely getting by and in constant turmoil. We get a small taste of the glory years through the title sequence, but spend the rest of the movie alongside Randy as he wrestles for a living in small town venues and make shift locker rooms. His only retreat being a near by strip club were he finds solace with a stripper named Pam played terrifically by Marisa Tomei. You can feel the chemistry between the two and can see the relationship the two have even though Pam tries so hard to ignore it.
As the film goes on life gets tougher and more challenging for Randy. He suffers a life changing experience that makes him question his importance and how his world is. This pushes him to finally contact his estranged daughter played by Evan Rachel Wood. The result is a hurricane of emotions and broken promises.
There are not too many highs in The Wrestler. There are glimmers of hope that things will turn out well for Randy, but they are short lived. No, the life of Randy "The Ram" is a sad one and through the brilliant performances and amazing story it drags you down with him and you can't help, but feel his anguish.
The film is amazing and well established. The hype surrounding it is well deserved. This is a great film and will always be remembered as such. I had only one issue with the film, but it will not be mentioned here. This one issue is not enough to derail such an accomplished film.
The Wrestler is a must for anyone who loves a well told story that is backed up by even stronger performances.
