"The best movie of 2009 so far"
I have been fortunate for the last few weeks for the opportunity of going for early screenings to see films courtesy of my landlord, one of the films I saw this weekend was Star trek and as you can see i thought it was amazing.
I was never really a fan of Star trek, as I always thought of trekkers immediately and I would often try to watch re runs of the classic 1960's series with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy in the lead roles, but then I would just immediately sleep on the couch I was watching it from.
But after seeing this film I became a fan more or less, the cast was perhaps as accurate as you get to the original television show as they all resemble the classic cast, most importantly the role of Spock which had fans crossing their fingers if Zachary Quinto could do it well. But the question why I thought of the film being so brilliant was for a number of reasons.
J.J Abram's who most people tend to hate on, I actually think he has a great theatrical vision for film and has done an excellent job on Star trek, he has not only made the series more exiting by adding action sequences which could only be imaginable in the 60's but also added some cinematography and lighting skills that make the film feel like you are on those planets and feel for the characters. The effects of the film are amazing, the snow creature is perhaps one of the events of the year as when you watch it feels like it's coming swallow you hole, The movie has better dialog to the original show by giving the characters a sense of humour and some sort of sexual understanding towards each other (never explored in the 60's series). They are a young cast and at first I thought to myself if the film would just be a childish mistake of adaption but later after seeing the film I saw what a big change it did. There is a brief appearance by Wynona rider (I suppose she needed some extra money), but then there is also Eric Bana's take on The arch-villain of the crew of the U.S.S enterprise which perhaps was the only thing that made the film pale, despite the cool take on the movie by showing us the origins of the crew, the story between Nero and Kirk is a typical vengeance plot that is in all epic movies. So in the end I was highly pleased on what J.J Abram's did to the series, he not only make me a fan of star trek but also highly anticipate a sequel.
To suggest to people who have read the review, I highly suggest to see the film in THE IMAX EXPERIENCE for I got to see it in the format, it made the movie more enjoyable and made me just want to return to theatres.
