"Could'nt live up to the hype."
When i first heard Rob Zombie would be directing a horror movie i was extacic to say the least.I am a HUGE fan of Mr.Zombie but I must say this directorial debut leaves alot to be desired.Lets start with the story. Now i know it is hard to come up with an original idea, especially in horror nowadays but I am suprised this movie was not sued for using the EXACT same story as Texas Chainsaw Massacre films.A family of sadistic, cannibalistic psychopaths and the poor young kids who wander into they're midst. Now do'nt get me wrong certain SCENES were original but nothing amazed me in the slightest. It is deffinitely what i thought it would be.The acting is'nt too bad the psychopaths are psychotic and the kids are....well kids,so what else can you really ask for?Although no performance is spectacular, the best being Mr.Zombie's wife Sherri who is absolutely mental and quite sexy....(Dont hurt me Rob).It breaks my metal loving heart to rate the directing of this movie so low but I have to be honest and you still have a long way to go Zombie. The visuals are AWFUL!Probably my biggest problem with the movie is the visuals.First of all this movie was hyped that it would be extremely violent....did I miss something? This movie was tame and most of the gory scenes were hidden by an awful camera view.At some scenes i guess they just thought it would be cool to give you the effect as if you had just held a magnet to your T.V screen and warped the color. And not only that but some scenes are linked to scenes(having nothing to do with the last one bear in mind!) by nothing but a spastic acid trip of camera work and color.Which is sooo much less effective than you know.....a story. So I am sorry to say that somehow Rob missed the mark and i hope he continues to work and improve his directing style.Better luck next time!

I see your point, the story line is kind of similar to that of
Texas Chainsaw! But you said it yourself, it's hard to have
a super original premise for a horror movie nowadays!
At least Zombie took his own twisted version (not "stealing" the idea, might i add) and made it memorable! I think for his first shot at directing, he did a damn good job! I have to agree with the visuals, they did blow! but when was this movie made? I think Zombie was trying to create a unique approach from cutting from scene to scene. Or just trying to allow the stoner fans to appreciate the film more when watching it in the theater! but other than that he created characters that were truly horrifying, without making the villain(s) something over the top and unrealistic! Speaking of the characters, you found Sherri's character Baby.. how did you put it, oh yes thats right.. "quite sexy"? Mental patients turn you on?? thats just dandy!! this movie was one of the best horror movies of our time, in my opinion! & the sequel The Devils Rejects, was a great ending for Zombie's creative murderous characters!
