"Literally screeches through the sky with tamable, but near limitless intelligence and imagination. Its not this years Dark Knight. But it is this years summer movie. Overall: This movie blew every alien movie before it away."
***Spoiler Alert***
This was my most awaited movie of the year next to Watchmen and Public enemies. Both of those were great. But this blew this years competition out of the water. I hope it does well in the box office because it deserves it. Me and my friends saw this tonight. the theater was packed and the parking line was insane. 20% was for G.I. Joe and 10% for Time Travelers Wife. But the rest were flooded into the 2 screenings for 7:00 and 7:45. We, going to the former, and running late, barely got seats together. The trailers passed, all of which I have seen on this site, and I was impatient for it to start. I read it started slow, and its sort of true. but its needed to build the story so 20minutes of talking is worth 1 hour of running, cussing, and blood spattering action. It was not overly gory. It was realistic.
The story revolves around a U.F.O. full of aliens arriving in South Africa. Hovering there, and the eyes of the world looking at them, the South American government and laterly founded M.N.U., decide to drill and dig their way in after there is no response. When doing so they were on the verge of a great discovery. Expecting high tech gear, and weaponry, and peaceful all knowing creatures, they instead stumble upon a city full of refugee like aliens. More like a ghetto than paradise. Malnutrition and poverty setting in, the government acted quickly getting them off and into refugee camps and feeding them.
Now over 2 decades later, the wold and South Africa are tired of the aliens. Costing a lot of money, being involved in petty crimes, and restricted to District 9, the "Prawns" at their dubbed, contain no signs of the greatness they could have possessed at one time. M.N.U. are ideally pissed at aliens, expecting weapons and technology for themselves (being the #2 greatest arms dealer in the world), and getting in return rebellion and a language only few can understand.
During this time, M.N.U. does a "relocation" of the Prawns, from a slum, to a seemingly brand new but actually tighter space outside of the city of Johannesburg. At the tip of this charge is Wikus van der Merwe, a nerdy do gooder, fond of the F word. Married to a beautiful woman, and son in law to his boss, he has a good life. They go door to door, hundreds of them, noticing, evicting, and for the more hostile, killing the foreign creatures. But when a rebel alien, tired of his people being mistreated and abused by the humans, decides to make a special thing, that tuns man into Prawn. Wikus encounters this thing which slowly mutates him into an alien. He already grows a claw and has a perfect balance of Alien/Human blood. He is soon taken, held, and tortured, by the M.N.U. He is forced to try the aliens foreign guns, being that only Prawns can access their own weaponry. when Wikus succeeds in every Prawn technology, he becomes the key to M.N.U.s survival and domination of the arms market. He escapes however, and becomes the most wanted man in the world. He flees to the only place hes safe: District 9. His search to become full human starts, and he finds things people will never know. That's all i will say for now.
The acting: Brilliant. The acting was 4.5 with most, but Wikus, portrayed by Sharlto Copley, was brilliant. To act so honest and truthful in the midst of aliens that aren't even there is incredible, and the fact that its all improv almost makes it even better. Everyone else does good as well, especially that bastard of an M.N.U. agent.
The effects: effects don't make a movie. That said, these are excellent. The aliens are more than believable, the ship is great, and all the effects and explosions, etc: WOW. God it reminded me of Halo.
Directing/writing: near perfect. The fact they finished this so fast, and directed/edited it so well was spectacular. I don't want to give away surprises, but man this guy should have done Halo. Maybe he will.
Overall: the best movie of the year so far. No joke. Don't get your hopes up to high, cuz my some of my friends thought it was ok only, but some thought it a masterpiece as I did. Judge as you may, but back it up because although this movie has holes, it is the PERFECT summer movie.
